In the German elections, despite the headlines, AfD did worse than they hoped. SPD also did much worse than expected, possibly because of close relations with centre-right CDU (equivalent to UK's Tories).

I voted Green/Die Linke and so am happy with the result. It could have been way worse.
Thoughts on the German election: AfD did better than I would have liked, but worse than they hoped. They're performing well among disaffected people, especially in the former East German states. But Die Linke - which is what's left of the former East German communist party - did unexpectedly well, especially among female voters. CDU (known in southern states as CSU, so collectively Union) performed as expected, but no better. The SPD - the former socialist workers' party - did much worse than they hoped, possibly because of their close relations with the centre-right CDU (the equivalent of the Tories). SPD are behaving much like Labour in UK is now: Tory lite. Greens have been in government for a while as part of the coalition, which meant they had to compromise. In my opinion, this put many of their core voters off voting for them - they've lost trust, which is a shame, and I'm not sure they could have doe any differently, just like the Lib Dems had to compromise to work with the Tories, and were punished as a result. ** Germans have two votes: one for a directly elected candidate for their area, and then a second vote, for a party. The % of vote share matters - they must reach 5% to get a seat in parliament, then after that, the number of politicians will be shared according to vote share. So every vote past 5% counts. What this means is that BSW (formed last year by one particular vocal politician breaking away from Die Linke and forming her own party), the disruptive business-friendly (ie, consumer unfriendly) FDP and others don't get a say. I voted Green/Die Linke and so am happy with the result. It could have been a great deal worse. preliminary results ("Vorläufiges Ergebnis") from the 2025 German federal election (Bundestagswahl 2025). It's a bar chart displaying the percentage of votes received by different political parties: Union (CDU/CSU): 28.52% AfD: 20.80% SPD: 16.41% Grüne (Green Party): 11.61% Linke (Left Party): 8.77% BSW: 4.97% FDP: 4.33% Andere (Others): 4.59% The results are presented as colored bars - black for Union, blue for AfD, red for SPD, green for the Greens, purple for Die Linke, dark purple for BSW, yellow for FDP, and gray for others. The data is labeled as coming from the Federal Returning Officer ("Bundeswahlleiterin"). voting preferences among 18-24 year olds in Germany for the Bundestagswahl (Federal Parliament Election), broken down by gender. The data is separated into "Frauen" (Women) and "Männer" (Men) columns. The parties shown are: Linke (Left Party): Women 34%, Men 15% AfD (Alternative for Germany): Women 14%, Men 25% Union (CDU/CSU): Women 10%, Men 17% SPD (Social Democratic Party): Women 12%, Men 12% Grüne (Green Party): Women 13%, Men 11% FDP (Free Democratic Party): Women 4%, Men 7% BSW: Women 6%, Men 6% The data is presented as a horizontal bar chart with different colors for each party. The most striking differences between genders are with the Linke party (much more popular among young women) and the AfD (much more popular among young men). My silver lining for the German election results is that #DieLinke now have the largest vote share in #Berlin (😊) . Although we have two cities in one : the outskirts are mostly CDU and AfD (😕) . I hope this carries through to the next city elections 🤞 #btw2025
