It is insanely wild to land a gig at Vanity Fair by pulling a literal Becky Sharp
there is actually a story in this revolting Nuzzi piece if you sandblast away the lies about a hot young woman being "in love" with a guy old enough to be her grandfather who looks like a catcher's mitt and sounds like an evil muppet

just took my dog for a walk during a break in the rain and there is a little redwood grove next to the neighborhood Ethiopian restaurant, and they lit some myrrh as they were cleaning the floor…I can’t even express to you how good redwood, petrichor and myrrh smells

I read the Golden Compass so many times that the spine of my paperback completely disintegrated and I cried for days when I realized I’d never have a dæmon. I loved the idea a person could be complete, just by themselves
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

This right here.
Chris Murphy: "There will be pretty substantial damage to a Dem brand that has been rehabilitated if on the heels of an election in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop... if we surrender without having gotten anything, I worry it'll be hard to get them back up off the mat"

Isn’t your job, like, at a minimum to know how the vote is going to turn out
Schumer: "However this vote turns out, this fight will and must continue. Democrats must fight."

I think a huge part of this is the material objects and housing that survive are of largely the highest quality of each era and so we think that was the average, not the exceptional
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

Just saw Frankenstein and the set, the costumes, the vibes were all immaculate but what I really loved is it kept all the weird 19th century-ness of the novel. Insane wolf attacks, lifting whole pages from other books, every single character who dies gets a deathbed monologue et cetera et cetera
