god bless that person on r/GradSchool who said that if checking your email gives you a panic attack you should take 24-48 hours off from work afterwards…if I managed my anxiety that way I’d never get anything done

trying to understand the psychology of fake friends. I seem to attract too many of these people. Are they consciously remaining in proximity to me because they want to copy me etc.? Do they even understand how much they actually hate me, or is that only on a subconscious level?

This means NSF dissertation improvement grants in the social sciences are simply...not happening.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

sometimes I forget that people who didn’t grow up in conservative circles where most families had 5-7 kids don’t automatically associate large families with religious conservativism
Conservatives have more children nowadays. Seems to be true, descriptively (though Brad's analysis is a mess). This is women's probability of being conservative by number of children, across birth cohorts in the GSS
(note: 3 is >=3 children):

I really wish my discipline had fewer shitty people in it because why am I sitting here crying for three hours trying to figure out how to explain to X person why I can’t take a class with their colleague Y

I’m always impressed by the number of students who feel that the role of a course instructor is to dispense As like a vending machine. Imagine being so mad about getting only 99% on an assignment that you think official complaints against the faculty member are warranted

really tired of academics who continue to pretend that “climate doomerism” results from irrational risk attitudes and not, like, being more informed than average about about the actual climate risks we are facing

The part where they threatened to break a judge’s car windows should be a bigger story … they feel comfortable treating judges this way, which means they are being told that they can do literally anything to nearly everyone

this is wild

the webpage for my fellowship words everything so carefully. Yes, it’s a merit fellowship for people who have overcome barriers to higher ed, but they have to formally state that it’s open to all genders and races and complies with all national anti-discrimination laws
“DNH is seeking a declaratory judgment that the scholarship violates the Equal Protection Clause and Title VI, as well as a permanent injunction "barring Defendants from seeing or considering applicants’ race when selecting the recipients" for the scholarship.”

I am just…convinced that the masses do not understand how academia works. Some folks over on threads pointed out that most of those “online, 100% acceptance rate” management and leadership PhDs that you pay to do are predatory and scammy and can actually blacklist you from many jobs.
