Thoughts and prayers aren’t worth much, at least south of the Divide. It’s a sentiment the plastics use when they hear of things like our mortality rate or ever-increasing birth defects, but don’t be fooled. This is America where thinking’s outdated, and we pray to pills.

In the north, they manufacture god in pharmaceutical bottles labeled “GeNew.” Not that anyone I know could ever afford it. Health, wealth, and beauty belong to the financially devout. To be fair, we all love money…it just doesn’t love us all back.

Uncle David tells me food’s the problem as he peels away two breakfast cubes from their thin plastic wrapping.

“It’s this damn processed shit makin’ us sick,” he says, smacking the pot harder than necessary on the single electric burner.

Guess it’s boiled cube, today.

“They price gouge us with poison, then try to sell us the cure. It’s all about money, May, mark my words. Those bastards at HealthCorp don’t give a damn about us unless we’re paddin’ their pockets.”

I nod along as I always do when the injustice inside him spills out in the form of a rant. David’s from a time they remembered whole foods, even if what they ate was a mere semblance of the real thing. Perhaps in Europe and the Asias it still exists along with their muffled cries for human rights.

As for me, I can’t be angry. Anger takes energy, of which I’ve little to spare. Like everyone this side of the Divide, I’m ugly with deformities. Weak with sickness. My broad shoulders hunch, and my spine curves to a hump at the base of my neck. My fragile hair litters our single room apartment like the black polyester threads from our tattered clothes. Like everyone, I am dying.

The Pitch:
Beckett has a five-year plan. The only thing standing between him and his promotion to COO is the buyout of a small real estate company. While working undercover at the realty business, the mean and attractive receptionist, Natasha, makes his job hell. One wrong move has her pinned underneath him, stirring feelings in him he thought died a long time ago.

When her sugar daddy ends their contact, Natasha is abandoned, broke, and screwed without his double oven she used for her and her best friend’s baking business. Struggling to pay rent and make profit, Nat spends late nights baking with her busted Kenmore.
