Trans rights are human rights. No excuses, no exceptions, bodily autonomy for all people, unregulated gender expression for everyone, inclusion of trans people in every space their gender identity calls for 24/7

International Lesbian Day, what better time to describe the very strange path I took to realize I am a lesbian.

As a kid, I knew I was “wrong”. Growing up in a small, religious town in Wisconsin in the 90s, I could tell I wasn’t like the boys around me but I wasn’t sure why.

So I do. And suddenly, the dysphoria of trying to fit into the wrong boxes clears. I’m a woman. And you know what? Men are fine, even hot sometimes. But women? Holy shit they’re incredible. So I’m a lesbian!

Turns out young me was right about being gay. Just got her own gender wrong.

But I’m STILL not saying I’m a woman.

You know what finally gets me to say it? Having wonderful trans women in my life. Ones I feel a kinship and attraction to.

Why am I still putting up these walls? Still trying to say I’m exclusively nonbinary? I’m a woman dammit! Say it!

Time to start estrogen. To be MORE nonbinary, not because I’m a woman, obviously. Let’s balance those hormones.

When my estrogen levels come back high and my testosterone comes back basically zero, I tell my doctor I like it that way.

That relationship ended years later. It was far more fulfilling than any of my relationships with men, but it still always felt wrong.

Years later, I finally convinced myself that not only was I QUEER, I am non-binary. So. They/them pronouns. Makeup. Women’s clothing.

Was I actually attracted to any of this? I mean, sorta. I didn’t mind it. Occasionally I had sex I would qualify as “fine”.

But yeah. It wasn’t quite right.

I may have wanted to be a girl, but transexuals were just the weird angry people on daytime talk shows and the folks comedies use as a punching bag. Surely that wasn’t me?

So I embraced being a gay man. I dated exclusively men. I started looking exclusively at man-on-man porn

With my limited vocabulary and fear of talking to anyone about these feelings, I came to the conclusion I must be gay.

Of course, this meant I thought that meant I was a gay Man. Because what else could be?
