These maps are utterly amazing, the author wrote up detailed descriptions and design choices in the GitHub repos - really detailed and brilliant work! #astrosci
it is a big energy resource; shown to be bigger than oil gas and nuclear notwithstanding cleaner environment goals and it is also found in deposits not a flux like incident solar

$200 billion worth of data center projects are being built in the South, according to a new report from @mediajustice.bsky.social.

To keep up with the massive amounts of energy these centers consume, projects like gas pipelines and coal plants are also growing.

Today's final approval of the North West Shelf is a climate, economic, and energy security disaster.

Australia Institute analysis shows the 45-year expansion is equivalent to building 12 new coal power stations.

#Seaweed farms are a dual solution for climate change & sustainable energy.
- don't require freshwater, fertilizer, or arable land to grow, making it one of the most eco-friendly resources
- naturally absorbs massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis helping

Beyond just utility bills, groups say the LG&E proposal worsens climate change and pollution, as it scraps a proposed battery plants and keeps an extra coal plant open in Louisville that was set to retire, in addition to the new gas plants.
Kentucky AG, LG&E agree to keep coal plant operating for future data centers
The electric utilities’ proposal would spend billions of dollars on new power plants to supply future data centers, but is now amended to extend the life of another coal plant.

LNG is worse than coal when it comes to warming impacts due to high methane emissions.

If Japan isn't starting to realize the error of their ways, they will.

However, the powers that be in Japan are working to mislead the world about this basic science so they can make a few more $$$.

ICYMI: LG&E wants to spend $3B on 2 new gas plants & extend the life of two new coal plants, largely due to future data center demand. Other states have higher energy bills now because of data centers, but LG&E says it has a mechanism to protect KY ratepayers... which some are very skeptical of.
LG&E says $3B expansion will protect Kentucky ratepayers from data center costs, others are doubtful
Kentucky’s largest utility company is proposing a mechanism to make new data centers pay their fair share, but first wants approval to build $3 billion of new gas plants.

Trump’s treatment of Appalachia’s coal miners exemplifies his approach to labor in general: Kneecap unions whenever possible, prop up industry profits at all costs, and if a few workers die in the process, pretend it never happened.

My mother scavenged coal from the railway tracks and one year had to burn furniture and the lino for warmth. Her mother lived on bread, margarine and sweet tea to feed the kids. Poverty has always been with us. The difference is that a lot of boomers don’t want their kids to have it better than them
LSB or last stage blades on steam turbines each can span dozens of inches often wondered if a wind turbine blade could be the actual LSB if any research could be done on that

New from Peter Blanchard! A possible NIR-counterpart (observed with JWST, “NIR-1”) to an extremely close and bright fast radio burst (FRB). The origins of FRBs are uncertain, and until now*, haven’t been observed in any non-radio wavelength! very very cool !! 🧪🔭☄️
