Went to a small liberal arts college with ambitions to be a filmmaker (Kubrick, Spielberg) or novelist. Struggled at having to invent plots and make stuff up. Joined the college paper. Found writing about reality a lot easier. Have done that one way or another ever since

New rules will boost lending and profits and entrench American dominance. But critics say they could lead to another crash

The tribune of the poor, the downtrodden? Studies clearly indicate that Trump’s most ardent supporters, especially in poorer areas, are, by local standards, quite wealthy / financially stable. Their “economic anxiety” is mostly downstream from anxieties over racial and cultural status.

After the election, prominent commentators immediately reached for grand explanations that were intended to match the emotional impact of what many perceived to be a shocking victory. We were witnessing nothing short of an era-defining rightward realignment, we were told.

Ideas of a “populist revolt” against ignorant liberal elites, a backlash against “woke” radicalism are stubbornly persistent – as is the idea that Trump emerged from the election with a broad mandate to correct course and impose his radical agenda.

But it’s just not true.

There hasn't been a big financial crash in a while, let's scrap regulation. After the next big financial crash: why didn't we have effective regulation? And so the pendulum swings, because when regulation works, we regularly forget why we need it.
A “shift to looser regulation is ‘likely to reduce the resilience of the banking sector to systemic market shocks.’”

A key lesson from 2008 was “heavily indebted banks lacked the equity capital to absorb large losses, leaving regulators [to let] banks fail or bail them out to protect depositors.”
This seems like an important story.
