Hello new followers! I’ve published on early modern English poetry in manuscript and print, women writers, and quant approaches. I’m currently running a project where we are computationally modeling the circulation of verse in MSS. We’re working on an exciting application of AI to support that work.

December 5, 1979: Darryl Dawkins shatters his second backboard in 22 days, delaying the game between the 76ers and Spurs in Philadelphia by 74 minutes.

Dawkins finished with 20 PTS and Julius Erving had 28 PTS/10 AST/5 BLK/5 STL in the Sixers' 132-120 win. San Antonio's George Gervin scored 42 PTS.

The earliest jointly-appointed professor of English and (Computer and) Information Science, to my knowledge, was Sally Sedelow at UNC-Chapel Hill. It was 1966.

Points go to @mm-jj-nn.bsky.social for the closest guess.
Guess also: who was the first professor jointly appointed in English and Information Science, and what year (or decade) was it?

I just watched (!!) the first Old Man and the Three with Cam Johnson, and I remain convinced that Cam must be one of the nicest people in all of basketball. If we can't have him back in Phoenix, I'm glad that he gets to play with Jokic.

I like the implication that one can just “sign up” for the NBA like a local rec league
“I don’t look at it as it’s unfair to the people, our team, our organization to look at this as anything other than just another NBA season....You sign up in the NBA because of the purity of the competition working together." (11/26/2025)

In an effort to tidy up before the holI days, I have once again “returned” one of my own hardcover books to the university library. 🤦‍♀️

“If the league wants to do right by Chris Paul, send him to the 21–1 Oklahoma City Thunder. Let him finish his career next to his protégé, Shai Gilgeous Alexander, the same player he mentored back in 2019. They do not need the help, but at least it puts the Point God in a position to chase a ring.”

Today's #acadecawriteathon progress: 401 words of a proposal that I hope to finish this year for a project I won't be able to start until 2028. 😬

Now back to data cleaning until the university tree lighting! 🎄

What a tacky way to treat anyone, much less a future Hall of Famer who took a minimum contract just to join your sinking ship of a team

I didn't get a chance to start #acadecawriteathon yesterday, so I made up for it with 700 words this afternoon/evening (after a fantastic viva and subsequent celebratory lunch earlier in the day!).

I have put Christmas lights in every room of the house. This weather has me wondering if I can add some to my office too.

I’m going for it. Maybe I can wring out one more chapter!
starting Dec 1st! ie tomorrow!

for structure to eke out pages at a bonkers time of year (that is also a precious writing-est time):

you can do 250 words a day! books get written that way! if more, amazing! if not when grading or festive-ing, that's ok!

check in daily at #acadecawriteathon
is there a NaNoWriMo but for December and academic/ nonfiction? Should we start it?

A little plug for my article on Devon book sales c. 1700, which has gone online open access. tl;dr book auctions weren't just a London/Oxbridge thing: a flourishing second-hand book market centred on Exeter included auctions from the 1680s.

Kind of annoyed that an article I published a long time ago in a print journal is now online with, allegedly, a CC-BY-NC licence. It probably doesn't matter, but I would have chosen CC-BY-NC-ND if asked.

End niche mini-rant.
