In case you missed the news, as of January 17th, Arctic sea-ice extent once again dipped to a new record daily low, over 50,000 km² below the previous record daily low set just last year.

Last month observed well above average sea surface temperatures in areas surrounding the Arctic Ocean. This was especially notable in the Labrador Sea near Greenland and Baltic Sea.

This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.

After a modest decline over the first half of the year (and after record 2024 warmth), global temperatures are ticking back up. The past two days have been the warmest on record for this time of year in ERA5 and the highest temperature anomalies since January.
