I think a lot of it is their seriousness. I can't process a movie that has only one note and that note is, look how important and serious this story is. A lot of Christopher Nolan films fit this.

To me a serious film needs, most of all, not to take itself too seriously.

There are films I've watched that I couldn't tell you much about because they never captivated me. All the Godfather movies are lost on me. I couldn't care less about them as I was watching them. Their cultural importance mystifies me. There are a lot of important films that I found meh.

So, Whannell wrote the script and cast the actors and directed them. I place this failure on his shoulders. In the end it's a mess. And, worst of all, it is something no horror movie should be—boring.

So, a bad script. Then it's left to the actors to imbue the characters with an inner life. Abbott does his best before he starts to go wolfen. But Garner is not even in this movie. There's a scene where she says she loves him and he's her best friend—but there'd been no evidence of that, at all.

On reflection, the problem's with this movie started with the script. It's essentially a thinly veiled metaphor for men with daddy issues wherein daddy was gruff and maybe brimming with toxic masculinity. But the male protagonist (the Wolf Man) is rendered as wimpy and weak and sort of a mess.

I've watched two Julia Garner films this year (FF4 and Wolf Man) and I don't get the appeal. She seems fairly wooden as an actress.

There are events in the life of a writer that they'd like to write about. But the time from that event to the time when that book containing that writing could be published might be months or, more likely, years.
It results in reflection, a slow cooling of thought.
The underlying passion remains.
