Make your own great pumpkin … challah

Shape into round after first rise, oil & loosely tie string to resemble pumpkin sections. Place in oiled 10-inch pie tin. Let rise. Add paprika or turmeric to yolks for wash. Brush on & bake in tin. Remove string. Add a real pumpkin stem or a cinnamon stick.
A great pumpkin … challah for Shabbat dinner in 10/31, Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Recipes for sweet or savory pumpkin challahs from my @jewishsf.bsky.social column. Directions on how to shape any challah dough into this delightful pumpkin shape in comments below. jweekly.com/2023/10/27/s...
It will be published in January on @jewishsf.bsky.social and I will post the link. Here’s a look inside
This is a new updated version. The first one was good. I am hoping this one will be great!
Experienced this on a cruise ship. It’s cute. A few minutes of amusement as a way to eat dinner. Maybe better as an art installation
Recipe testing a crunchy, creamy, chocolatey shredded phyllo pastry for an upcoming @jewishsf.bsky.social recipe column. It’s filled with pistachios and coconut-hazelnut cream and has a spiced sugar syrup. A very special (and easy) dessert
What you wrote was fascinating. I don’t know if there is a link, or just parallel lines of development, but as a recipe/food writer I sometimes use pumpkin pie spice as a sub for harder to find spice mixes (sometimes with other spices) for the chai and coffee seasonings and similar mixes.
I’ve always thought the spice mix was similar to Indian chai masala mix for tea and Yemen hawaij for coffee and other regional hot drink spice mixes. All of which predate pumpkin spice lattes but confirm that the flavor profile has legs!
Reading one of his poems was a nightly bedtime ritual in our house.
Unusually for me I answered a call from an unknown number. Turned out to be “the leading conservative think tank” to quote my spammer who was calling a lifelong democrat and diehard liberal looking for donations. Requested my number struck from the list and wished him a “happy no kings day.”
Totally agree with @nrlines.bsky.social about @koshersoul.bsky.social He is a national treasure!
First, read this article and consider ordering Michael Twitty's new cookbook.

Second, find yourself a copy of Koshersoul. And while you're at it find a copy of The Cooking Gene. Both books are true gifts and incredibly informative in an accessibly narrative kind of way.

Mine would be none of the above. I’m strawberry rhubarb or nothing
Have you heard the disgusting pro ice raid commercials the department of homeland security is doing on Spotify. Officially paid by them. How is this legal?
Typo. Please Bluesky let us edit! — why all challahs aren’t …
In honor of my son, the cinnamon roll fanatic, happy National cinnamon roll day!

We can't rely on companies to do the right thing. This is why the Supreme Court was so profoundly wrong in Citizens United. Corporations are *not* people. They act only to gain profits, not to promote principles. They will not rescue us.

Donald Trump can't win the 2026 midterms fair and square - so he's trying to cheat by calling up his cronies in red states and asking for seats.

California: YOU have the power to stop him.

Vote YES on Prop 50 to defend fair elections and STOP Trump's election rigging.

Happy Constitution Day 2025. Who would ever have thought the constitution would be at its most precarious and menaced since the Civil War if not ever? But it’s where we are. We have to fight fight fight. A republic, if you can keep it.
