A great idea. Giving schools control of the streets in front of their buildings for extra space is a no brainer. And also a lot safer for our kids.

Call me crazy, but I think public space should actually benefit schools, the kids that live in the city, and residents

A lot of loud people are talking about Mamdani’s statement re ending G&T. The sky is not falling. Smaller class sizes are rolling out! All our students will get more individualized attention which is huge! Also: segregation is not good. It is unclear how Mamdani could support its perpetuation.

The Education Council Consortium, NEW Pride Agenda, PFLAG-NYC and Transformative Schools put together a letter in response to the Trump administration’s attacks on the DOE. We aren’t abandoning any of our kids to bullies - refusing to stand up for some harms them all. Sign-on and share!

We hope Chancellor Aviles-Ramos continues to stand by the policies that protect NYC kids even as Adams makes ridiculous statements. The time to stand up for all our kids is now - particularly as huge cuts to ELL programming are threatened as well.

“On at least two occasions during executive board meetings of the school's parent group, [Mark Levine’s hand-picked board member Sam Lo] described students on individualized education plans as ‘retards.’”

Wishing I could have my primary vote for comptroller back….

The anti-trans resolution that roiled one of Manhattan's public school parent councils for the last year and a half has finally been rescinded.

Does that mean the District 2 council has put messy factional politics behind it?

Nah.

Manhattan's Anti-Trans School Sports Resolution Is Finally Dead
But why did Borough President Mark Levine just hand control of the council back to the people who backed it?

A great article that captures the many concerns with the two boro president appointees / future direction of the board (and disappointment in Mark Levine) - even as parents are thrilled with the overturn of the anti-trans resolution.

Wanting all of our kids safe includes wanting ICE out of our city and absolutely nowhere near any school.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
We are just a group of tired parents who want to see positive change for ALL kids in this city, and we are early in our efforts, but we whole heartedly endorse Mamdani for Mayor.

We hope everyone who can vote gets out there in November to send a clear message that we want to go forward.
zohrankmamdani.bsky.social
Awful and dangerous to hear the Mayor echo the transphobic bigotry coming from the Trump administration. It's completely at odds with the values of our city and another reason why his single, disgraced term in office cannot end soon enough.
A screenshot of two tweets from the Politico reporter Joe Anuta.

The 1st: ".@NYCMayor elaborates on his comments yesterday that boys and girls should not use the same bathroom. He says he will review the policy of his own education department, which allows students to use restrooms “consistent with their gender identity” and potentially change it"

2nd: "He says students whose sex at birth differs should never be allowed to use the bathroom at the same time, regardless of gender identity"

We look forward to keeping a close eye on CEC D2 but also expanding to help push other CECs to do right by all kids - supporting high quality education and schools where every student is safe and accepted.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
The anti-trans resolution that caused all the attention on D2 CEC in the first place has been repealed. Whether Mark Levine’s appointees will vote for anything else progressive or will side with PLACE for inequality (as Sam Lo’s social media posts imply) and defunding remains to be seen.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
We will be live posting the D2 CEC meeting that starts at 6:30 tonight. 100 Hester Street (MS 131)
Also you can watch online (zoom) or via the CEC2 YouTube channel.

Here are the votes: cellphone clarification passes, rescind anti-trans PASSES, anti-ICE passes (a lot of lane abstains), PS 33 redevelopment passes.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Also we are coming up on a 9:45 deadline - down to the wire here. Gavin asking for PS 33 resolution to be expanded to push on refurbishment and tenant protections.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Danyela Egorov and Allyson Bowen coming out as pro-ICE / supporting federal policy. Danyela abstaining vs voting against it because she isn’t sure. Which…
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Sam Lo - who was asked to resign for other comments related to equity - is speaking in favor of 283 to rescind 248 / anti-trans. We are happy to hear that Mark at least screened for this.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
We are on to the four resolutions! Tamuira Reid speaking in favor of clarifying cellphones ban to better allow for kids who need assistive technology which isn’t in their IEP because it’s never been an issue. It takes significant time to modify an IEP. So this matters.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Cody Lindquist asking Craig to actually include everyone in notices for working committees. To not start out playing favorites.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Gavin Healy pointing out that Craig Slutzkin (the chair) seems to have slipped in a section to the bylaws that allows the chair to “resolve” any conflicts as he sees fit.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Bylaw changes, which will get voted on next month, will include a hybrid meeting allowance. But would still need 7 in person for quorum. Would allow for comments from people on zoom. One speaker session shouldn’t actually limit speakers.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
DOE maintains that no outside law enforcement is allowed in schools except for when they have a clear warrant or a true emergency situation. Great to see and important to keep all kids safe.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Superintendent report on test scores - improvements from switching to full phonics instruction in ELA. Esp. with ELL and IEP which is great. The first rounds of students who started it in K will start testing next year and the year after - will be interesting to see if larger bumps in the future.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Superintendent Kelly providing his update which includes a reminder that 283 should be passed since 248 is wildly out of line with laws and regulations. Do we think this group will listen - stay tuned!
familiesforchange.bsky.social
Also great and impassioned speakers in support of the anti-ICE /protecting all students regardless of immigration status resolution (284). One made the very reasonable request that any member who doesn’t vote in favor at least explain themselves to parents and community.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
The usual suspects - community and parents - doing a lovely job speaking out against 248 and asking for its repeal. One absolute jerk speaking for.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
A few Salk and 75 Morton parents getting up to talk. Neither school wants to be combined. That seems like the right call. Although as other meetings have raised Salk has a space issue that will need a solution eventually. But this combination is not it.
familiesforchange.bsky.social
A bunch of parents and staff speaking out again against the awful principal at the River School. It would be great if the DOE put students first and removed bad principals. It shouldn’t take multiple years.
