One time Joe Lhota said he wanted to see some positive tweets about the subway, and I answered the call. Repeal Hecht-Calandra. NYCDOE/NYCPS parent emeritus. All content is handcrafted _just_ for you and represents my personal opinions only

For no particular reason tonight I’m reminded that Chuck Schumer runs all of his decision-making through an imaginary Republican family that lives in a LI suburb where 1.1% of the residents are Black, 97% live in a SFH they own, and 3% are under the poverty line

I don’t know if I’m going to add it to my “inflection point” series, but the replies on Blakeman’s official Facebook page’s announcement about this are pretty uniformly critical of it and a nontrivial number of the critics are from the white guys with sunglasses crowd

OPINION | I was Mike Bloomberg’s school-closing Grim Reaper. Here’s why Mamdani will be a bad education mayor if in a cooling private school hiring market he doesn’t give jobs to grads of the tiny $40K/year graduate school of education I’m paid $622,000 to run

Zohran Mamdani can, & must, fix our classrooms
Education barely registered in this year’s mayoral race, but the nation’s largest school system will now be the crucible for Zohran Mamdani’s progressive ideals. He inherits a vast bureaucracy, but…

With the deadline for NYCPS HS applications looming I’m just going to repost this reply thread as my yearly reminder that few students face a “competitive” application process and that is in no small part because the system effectively excludes kids with disabilities or those who got a B in MS
This is a common misperception, likely arising from the fact that all kids do need to go through an application process, but:

~20% of NYCPS HS seats are in big zoned legacy HS like Tottenville, Fort Hamilton, Francis Lewis, etc—if you live in the zone, you’re automatically in 1/4

yes people call the friday after thanksgiving Brown Friday.

yes plumbers get lots of holiday calls.

yes it's because you overwork your disposals, pour fat/gravy/grease in your sink, and clog hosts' toilets.

holidays are hard enough as it is.

don't make them harder.

Gonna be a long 8 years if the Times publishes an article criticizing Mamdani every time some people he has no relationship with say something some small-c conservative rabbis dislike.

(I am looking forward to every single Republican state legislator voting for free-speech suppression zones though)
Zohran Mamdani chastised a Manhattan synagogue that hosted an event promoting migration to Israel and settlements in occupied territories. His stance further tested his strained relationship with pro-Israel Jews in New York.

This is a great read and worth registering for!

The biggest lie the Ivies etc tell is when they say well *of course* a 1350 from a bottom 10% HHI kid is an exceptionally strong score when they just don’t admit 1350 kids (unless they are legacies, athletes, or from the donor’s list)

The SAT may suit the Ivies, but it undermines the mission of America’s public institutions. https://bit.ly/4oe4Qrq

Who could have guessed that making kids go to school for grades 4–12 being over-age and stigmatized wouldn’t be good for them, what a shock
Turns out that holding kids back if they can't read by 3rd grade is good for temporary test score increases but terrible for the adults the kids become www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...
