Political Scientists would call it a "tactical concession" (RRS' Spiral Model). Human rights and democracy campaigners need to make sure it leads to more gains (positive spiral) instead of stalling progress (negative spiral).
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Useful framing from the Sanaa Center about the current moment in #Yemen. The government has yet to meet the lowest bar: delivering basic security and services, meaningfully including Southerners and other voices, and conducting govt business through govt institutions, not non-state networks.

Yes, this. Tactical brilliance. In addition to SELMA (2014), the American experience episode on the sit-ins is terrific in this regard. I often show young organizers the segment on prepping for sit-ins as an example of setting a goal and planning backwards from it for everything you'll need.

Giants Brigades are taking control in Aden from STC forces. So far they’re at the presidential palace and central bank. Talking to folks earlier, they described lots of new checkpoints with “new people”. The Giants are believed to be temporary before passing control to Saudi-backed National Shield.
Much anticipation in Aden over what’s coming.
National Shield Forces appear to be on their way after reached Shabwah yesterday.
Today, reports indicate Presidential Guard and STC forces have left/are leaving strategic locations including Presidential palace compound. Adenis are holding their breath

The UAE removing their own forces from bases in southern Yemen does not change events or control on the ground. The issue is over USE-backed STC and Hadhrami Elite Forces.
The UAE appears to be putting its own interpretation on Saudi’s very clear demands.
The clock is ticking on Saudi’s 24hr ultimatum for withdrawal of UAE backed forces.
UAE is now claiming it’s ended its counter terrorism units in Yemen “voluntarily”.
Without a sign of STC troop withdrawal, it’s meaningless. Any handover to Hadhrami Elite Forces (UAE-backed) would be status quo.

The arguments made against immigrants are always the same and they're always false, regardless of what era it is or where each new group is coming from.
Insulting to have to point this out, but if you have spent even 30 minutes reading US history, you realize that every decade has been dominated by racist hysteria that the "new" people won't ever fit in.

This exact prejudice would have been applied to Miller's forebears, when they fled pogroms.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization
