My mom agreed that we could have a potato dish on Thursday that's something other than mashed potatoes. Hit me with your best potato recipes!

Other than being vegetarian, I'm an adventurous eater, but several guests are not.

My new & first book, Selling Out Santa, is Open Access!

If you like what you read and can, please consider buying a copy for you and maybe one for a history/film lover at Christmas (it's 40% off)!

It'll likely be my only income in over 2 years once royalties pay next July, so please consider it!
Selling Out Santa
Christmas is not just a day or a frame of mind as Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) imparts in Miracle on 34 th Street (1947); Christmas is also a vehicle for national mythmaking as an idealising mirror for...

I produce/host a history podcast & work in a university division that includes a history department, so I type the word history rather a lot. And yet my phone just autocorrected "history" to "diaper," a word I haven't typed since my youngest (who is now 11) was a toddler. Good job, robot overlords.

The strangest part is that when I saw the videos of trump with MBS all I could think is that I've never seen trump that genuinely happy before (which is terrifying). But then today he seemed that happy again with Mamdani. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes. Please, people, let's fight like we will win. A week ago nobody predicted a near unanimous vote on the release of the Epstein files. There will be bumps in the road, but the dark future Stephen Miller and company want is not ordained.
Reading the comments this morning could give a person the impression that average Dems WANT to lose.

Enough with the naysaying, my lord. We are having a really good week. Every crack in the foundation of MAGA will lead to its eventual demise.

Is there anything more annoying than going to the eye doctor, ordering new glasses, and then having to wait 7-10 business days to get said glasses, the whole time wondering if you made a decent choice in selecting frames, a difficult task with your already terrible vision made worse with dilation?

Rudy Bridges is younger than the Sitting President of the United States and 29 sitting United States Senators
It’s useful for people of my generation to be reminded that this wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges isn’t just still alive—she’s only 71, not ancient!
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

At least the MRIs I've had, the whole body doesn't even go in the machine, so it's pretty obvious what they're looking at. When I get brain MRIs it's only my head and shoulders that go in. When I got an ankle MRI, it was just my feet.
Love 2 go to the doctor and not know what body part they’re analyzing

The next episode of Unsung History is on the history of rum, and I thought, hey I should sip some rum while preparing the episode. So you don't make the same mistake I did, please know that Trader Joe's Rum of the Gods is one of the most vile things I've ever tasted.

Also, how is Blues Brothers not on this list? You can't be the Chicago Pope and not cheer on the Mission from God.

My kid is playing some kind of world domination video game, and he told me he was building a pointillist empire. I said I didn't think Daniel Immerwahr's book was meant to be an instruction manual, to which he replied: "Then he shouldn't have called it HOW TO Hide an Empire." Touché.
