It's very funny that Zack is just willling to say 'You're talking shit and you know you are' and nobody in politics or the media really knows how to cope with it.

Proven: strange patterns in the prime numbers that require chaos to understand. And a way to beat a 200 year old prime-hypothesis. My latest for Scientific American!

I don't think we talk enough about the very fundamental and insidious role by EdTech consultants in the whole fascist project. And, the fact that administrators defer to them and dismiss or even punish educators that contest or question the AI in education paradigm is telling.
benjaminschultzfig.bsky.social
Yesterday I received three(!) emails from Pearson trying to sell me AI ed tech that they marketed as explicitly "safe for students." They know this stuff is dangerous and are desperate to head off the criticisms.

For those of us in higher education this company has snaked its way into our institutions—and this is the kind of care and thought they put into the risks of their products.
Do you imagine our students are safe with these people?

Opencourseware and coursera have been great for African archaeology/ancient history, visual studies and linguistics - it’s definitely no problem finding the courses!
finokoye.bsky.social
One thing that would be great is being able to take open modules via coursera etc. as part of one’s masters.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem auditing extra online modules to make up for what’s missing but making it more cost effective might actually make coursera etc courses more appealing.

Shares appreciated! We’ve never been asked to resign to hopelessness. Last week, you helped single mom Mai escape from north Gaza—with 5s and 10s. This was nothing short of lifesaving. Let that fill you with boldness.

18 hours left 🚨 She needs food & blankets. Give/find her link here. 10/500

Look I love Ciarán Hinds as Caesar, 10/10 no notes, so glad the acting thing worked out for him, honoured to have witnessed such an amazing debut*

BUT now I’ve read this paper about Caesar as ancient Roman metrosexual dandy and I’m… I’m intrigued what a Chalamet-type could do in a ROME remake…

One of the most hilarious episodes in British history to learn about, particularly the decades and indeed centuries of “definitely nothing fishy was going on here, everything was legit and above-board” that followed.

I think the historiography is changing but it used to be taken for granted that England had never been successfully invaded since 1066. London was occupied by Dutch troops for a year and half!

Printers are like horses, they can sense fear and exploit it accordingly. The trick is to approach them with confidence and never show your belly.
neongrey.bsky.social
all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

Ohhhh that’s why it looks so great tonight!

Was thinking this was truly a night for walking in woods, the moon is so high and (here, anyway) the sky pretty clear 🤍🩶🤍

And still.

Learning Igbo and reading in Latin scripts (serious Nsibidi studies comes next year) is such a trip because every word has a moment where I’m like “sorry but how exactly did these repressed Victorian missionaries actually speak because *in what world* does this transliteration make sense??!??!?”

Can we get the word around for more donations to go to BlackSky so there’s funding for the infrastructure that can bring Link back?

From my understanding:

Relays are costly and expensive. Anyone feel free to chime in. Bluesky relays is what has him banned.

Let me get this straight: Link, a Black user, got banned for calling out the Bluesky CEO for following a racist. That’s not a good look, especially given Bluesky’s historical treatment of Black users here on bluesky.

Oof it’s funny how I agree with this and yet one ‘thinking point’ I regularly arrive at is that a program also has to/should be considered enough (ie with safeguards and feedback loops and accountability/disciplinary measures embedded) that it can be effectively ambivalent of inherent ‘worth’?
finokoye.bsky.social
Yes, very relatable!

My views about society are pretty independent of how annoying or silly I find people in academia or on the internet dot com. So I've pretty much retained my belief in Luxemburgist socialism despite finding online socialist culture cringe/infuriating, and academic socialists shallow and embarrassing.

Good write-up this. Every bit of research shows that 'pre-buttal' (i.e. people don't see the misinformation or malinformation first) is much more effective than factchecking. Part of that is 'government should try and make it so that you can cover UK politics without being on X'.
