love to live in a world where all my personal data is relentlessly harvested so that megacorps can feed it into their all-knowing algorithms and yet somehow the end result is that algorithm going “we think you’d like Clarkson’s Farm”

“Benefit caps” (ie reparative amendments for systemic silliness) are just so ridiculous because the money comes back! The money of the working classes always comes back!!!

Even our ISAs are too basic to truly drain much from the state lol

These past two years have seen protests across the continent. Kenya. Mozambique. Morocco. Madagascar, where the entry into the fray of the security services, Sudan 2019-style, even sent the president into exile. These protests have to do with anger – rage – at our broken social contracts.
We’re in a brave new world – even if our leaders are not

Right and this is such an interesting… disjoint in UX of LLM interfaces.

There are patterns from eg Google’s image recognition tool for visually indicating (as it’s all black box really) reliability and it’s really telling how a lot of UX discourse laser focussed on essentially micro-copy but +
It's really telling that the metrics that they're aiming for are things like "user interaction rate" and not things like "is it correct/helpful"
Not wanting to disappoint you so much that it lies is the last quality I want in a computer.

Andrew, because he’s a dickhead everyone hates; Mandelson, because he’s a dickhead who made the lobby hacks look like bent clowns. Even then, this was all decided offscreen, far from anything that looks like scrutiny. There are no higher principles at work than “Thou shalt not humiliate the lads”.

Honestly, I think the average British citizen might actually be shocked to hear how many visit visas are refused for things like births, graduations, funerals, weddings - things that they themselves would never stand for if it happened to their British families…
one of the most endlessly petty "we don't think you'll leave" visit visa refusals imaginable. see also: funerals, weddings

I have said before and will say again that it is such a loss that we no longer get covers of this caliber for fantasy books.

This art is by Jean-Léon Huens. These covers are for the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. They lit my imagination on fire as a kid.

To tie back to my comparison to other online radicalisation, even if you don't give a shit about trans people, the judiciary becoming increasingly partial on a specific issue should be seen as the canary in the coal mine giving the current direction of travel in this country
Like it was obvious when the Supreme Court randomly decided to rewrite the Equality Act, but I think there's a large amount if journalistic negligence that no one really treats judges as anything other than neutral conduits through which the word of law moves

This!! As someone who consults/freelances, the extra can occasionally just put me into higher tax brackets* but tbh it’s the fact I’m on effective pay cuts for the last 4 years which is doing the real damage…
My gym has gone up 11% my SIM card 17% and broadband 10% this year. Barely anyone gets a rise that big. So they feel fleeced by 40% tax bracket every time their pay goes up because employers long ago broke the idea they share success with employers

So yeah perception that you’re being fleeced by taxation when it’s more your employer giving inadequate rises and corporations profiteering you can see why ostensibly high earning people feel aggrieved
