I don't necessarily agree with the "if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to go" since I'm not going to judge everyone's situation in life (opportunity for joy when you're broke is a blessing). But, tipping should be a forethought when attending events with a tradition of passing the hat.

Performers don't need trinkets. We need to pay for rehearsal spaces and costumes and props and strings and - for some - this is their only source of income. 4/4

My hat pass banter consists of, "For $5 or more, you'll get a button - any amount gets our gratitude! And flattery will get you everywhere!" I give folks an out for not tipping.

But there is something actually insulting about receiving a trinket that person paid for instead of a tip 3/

This year the "trinket trading" craze got out of hand at our Ren Fair.

I had grown ass adults come up to me as I was sweaty and panting, passing the hat after our half hour fire show, proudly throwing trinkets into my tip bag.

Some people asked if we had trinkets to trade. During hat pass. 2/

If you are over the age of 17, don't pretend giving a performer a tchotchke is equivalent to a cash tip. FFS. 1/
