It was an honour to give the Hennessy Lecture at the @mileendinstitute.bsky.social on Wednesday. I assessed the commitments Western countries have made to Ukraine’s security and what might happen after a ceasefire. This is the text (and this post is free). samf.substack.com/p/as-long-as...
‘As Long as it Takes': What does it mean to commit to Ukraine’s security?
This post was originally a lecture given in honour of Peter Hennessy at the Mile End Institute, Queen Mary University of London.

Agree - & at the moment it is rather a shit-hole country. Their ads are confronting but I reckon that's exactly what's needed right now.

Last day for the local elections.

Voting closes at midday.

Voting booths are at supermarkets, libraries, etc.

#NZpol Reminder: local elections close tomorrow midday. Get your votes in.

If you don’t vote the silly candidates, unwanted political interference (VFF, ACT, etc), and dangerous candidates get more of a run. We really don’t need that.

As renewables overtake coal as the world's largest source of electricity, what did we get from the Tory conference?

- repeal the Climate Change Act
- scrap 2050 net-zero target
- remove renewable energy subsidies
- maximise oil and gas extraction from the North Sea

They are so out of touch!
Renewables overtake coal as world's biggest source of electricity
Developing countries lead the historic clean energy charge but the US and EU rely more on fossil fuels than before, a think tank study shows.

Haven't heard this for a while. Lovely version by Kurt Elling who performed at The Piano in 2018 during the Jazz Festival. He was absolutely wonderful.

Trump on pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell: Haven't heard the name in so long. I’ll take a look at it. I’ll speak to the DOJ. A lot of people have asked me for pardons.

Reporter: But she’s convicted of sex trafficking

Trump: I’ll have to take a look at it.

Yes, I think you're right about that.

Latest benefits data is out. More detail later, but suffice to say that we are going to need some new forecasts.

Here's the rest of the world, taking $12.6bn over the last year in net interest income (compared to $1.1bn central Govt). INCREDIBLE that is it the Govt interest payments that get the media coverage. [4/n]

Annual job growth still stuck firmly in the negative - running just short of 30,000 below the same week last year. Misery compounds. (1/2)

There are hardly any birds in my trees over the past few weeks. ☹️
Need to find a way to stop a neighbour's cat from hunting them. Any good & humane ideas gratefully accepted.

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com
