Letitia James is being indicted for saving $50/month on a loan?

Gee, I wonder how much loan money Donald Trump saved when he got more than $270 million in debt forgiven after he failed to repay loans on his Chicago skyscraper development . . .

Undermining faith in the dollar. Eliminating US foreign aid. Gutting US influence worldwide. A laughing stock at the UN. Trying to undermine the multilateral system. Redirecting the US military to domestic vendettas against his enemies and immigrants. I could go on. You get the point. Just nutso.

On NYT Home Page there's a Douthat column w/the headline "Trump's Foreign Policy is Succeeding. He Should Apply It's Lessons at Home." On what planet? Betraying our allies. Blowing up the global trading system. Embracing autocrats. Pulling back support for Ukraine. Helping to support Gaza slaughter.

Nearly nine months into Trump’s second term, immigration enforcement has become the regime’s primary political weapon — not to solve problems, but to manufacture fear, provoke outrage and stage an illusion of control.

This isn’t a crisis response. It’s crisis construction. WHY?

Trump is a lying idiot. He was indeed president at the time & incited violence against his own VP & Congress while attempting a coup to avoid prison. His malignant narcissism, criminality (first felon to hold office), bullying & dementia make him unfit for office.

Will the $400m gift Air Force One be kept at the new Qatari air base?
witwarrior.bsky.social
Indeed. Yet you’d think he might be advised not to publicly punch down, merely for the sake of his precious (albeit mythical) popularity.

I’m appalled by the fact that Trump continues to attack and denigrate a man in the grip of a health crisis.
Even an animal will desist if its opponent surrenders.

Oh, but let me guess: they're not funds appropriated by Congress, they're just funds Presidents now have to fund things as they see fit because they say so, what wonderful precedent that will set, going forward
CNN headline: Trump says funds have been ‘identified’ to pay troops amid government shutdown

The president announced on social media the administration has ‘identified funds’ to pay troops next week

Trump believes the Treasury is his personal fund. Eg.Apparently (I'm skeptical) Melania talked HUD into allocating more money for foster care. The Trump announcement about this literally sounds like Melania either gave her own money or fund raised it. But no. It's OUR tax $. bsky.app/profile/drde...
drdebk.bsky.social
Idaho GOP Mike Simpson is way up Trump's a$$. He stuck renaming Kennedy Center Opera House after Melania into spending bill. Usually must ACCOMPLISH something or GIVE $$$ for that. White House boasted that Melania got $25 million for foster care. FROM HUD! OUR $$!🤦🏻‍♀️ www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-st...

This is how you manage to go bankrupt 6 times; shifting funds away from their intended purpose until there are no funds in any account.

Functionally there is no Congress under Trump since he makes all the decisions about what money is spent where. And the Supreme Court overruled all the Congressional laws that were in place to limit the President's control over independent agencies and federal staff. We live in a totalitarian state.

Who owns the army is THE constitutional question of the 17th century
jim0novak.bsky.social
The U.S. Constitution's Army Clause (Article I, Section 8) requires that congressional appropriations to raise and support armies must be for a term no longer than two years.

They feared standing armies.

The Founders were more radical anti-fascists than common knowledge would expect.

Many historians of Rome identify Roman generals becoming the personal sources of payment for their armies as a key step in the downfall of the Republic, since it personalized military authority and freed armies to fight for their immediate leader, who paid them, instead of for the Republic

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

Via: www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

Or as the New York Times puts it: “Mr. Trump's budgetary maneuvering appeared unorthodox…”
Mr. Trump's budgetary maneuvering appeared unorthodox, even though it may spare more than 1 million active-duty service members from the financial hardship of missing a paycheck next week. It was not clear how much money the administration had at its disposal, and how long it could rely on accounting moves to pay troops during the shutdown.
