I write full time, have published a picture book that produces royalty checks, and some shorter fiction and poetry that paid small amounts. I also do paid school visits occasionally. This does not add up to a living wage. My husband is my primary benefactor so I can focus on my craft.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

In self-interest but also general interest, folks: Black Friday is coming up, and small publishers/independent creators will always be a better choice than megacorps.

When the sales drop, please remember that!

Absolutely appalling.
1. In Tennessee, public libraries have closed for up to a week to facilitate a Trump-inspired book purge.

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett (R) has ordered most of the state's public librarians to remove children's books with LGBTQ characters or themes.

Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
Not really my heart
Just somebody's heart
This year
If the cops should appear
Please tell them that you don't know me

95% of authors are not making a living through book publishing. The public needs to understand this.

Got an email offering animation services for my book. I assume the animation would be AI generated. Pretty sure the illustrator who created all the artwork for our book would be delighted if I gave them her artwork which I have no rights to 🤗 especially since she is an animator herself...

Back in the day, Barnes and Noble and Borders used to partner with local groups during the holidays to offer gift wrapping as fundraising opportunities. So you would pick a date and show up and wrap people's books for donations. It was a great way to also get the word out about your group.

I met Edwidge Danticat today, 😃🫠🥹!! Omg, her work has moved me for nearly 3 decades (starting with Krik Krak!). I don’t typically fan-girl over anyone, but today, I definitely did. Heeheeheeeeee!

Also, I was told that Queen Latifah loves my work and has been trying to meet me! 💃🏿

Huzzah! So originally I got a whiteboard for the grocery list, but at one point I noticed that the markers are so light that it was actually an accessible way for me to draw by hand again

But my doodles were taking up too much room lol, so this morning I finally got my own whiteboard 🥰
