📣 Major update to X-Scraper, which enables users to create corpora of tweets without the need for a subscription to X's unaffordable API: each tweet's full data/metadata is now available to include in the output file (except for TXT files, for now).

Caveat: because it works by scrolling the page to intercept incoming tweets as they are being displayed, it is wayyyyy slower than what the API can offer. But unless you have $5,000 a month to spend on a subscription to a *limited* version of the X API, this is as good as it gets!

Since the web app is easier to keep up to date, I will soon no longer maintain the plugin. Already, the web app has functionalities that the plugin does not have, such as anonymisation, metadata selection and better .xlsx file creation.

📣 RedditScraper, already a browser plugin, now also lives as a web app to help you build corpora of Reddit posts for discourse analysis.

The French word ‘employer’ (to emploi) has the same origin as ‘impliquer’ (to imply).

The former was inherited from Latin, while the latter was borrowed from it later.

They’re called doublets.

Stay tuned for doublets in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, Galician, Dutch and English.

'Because we're not brilliantly good at speaking other languages, a lot more people want to come here than Brits are able to go there.' The irony.

Maybe, just maybe, ditch the 'value for money' rhetoric, maintain the provision of modern languages and work on incentives for Brits to learn them? 🤔

Hillman: 'Will we get value for money from it?'

'Value for money' talk is what is closing humanities and modern languages departments across UK universities.
