The analogy is never Germany.

It's Argentina. Guy delivers some things for rabid base, has likeable wife (to some), gets Broadway show out of it.

This guy's not even got the likeable wife.
Praise be!

Although those two potential candidates, oof, like slamming your head in a car door until you're unconscious.

No more Ward 4 mayors! No more Fort Myer mayors!
Quite the pre-Thanksgiving news: Mayor Muriel Bowser will not seek a fourth term in office. That's a huge opening a mayoral race that still doesn't have any major candidates in it, but with possible entries from Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George and At-Large Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie.

I, for one, appreciate that Ward 7 continues its long tradition of electing troglodytes who are utterly predictable and useless.
NEWS: Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder is introducing emergency legislation that would delay ranked-choice voting, which is currently set to be rolled out in D.C. in 2026. His bill would mandate that Board of Elections conduct an assessment on what it would need to implement RCV.

This is partly true but moreso DOGE teams have become fully part of the departments they were integrated with and are very much alive and a part of normal processes now
The "DOGE is gone" articles are clickbait but this one gets it closer to the truth: DOGE is not gone, it just claims to have "no centralized leadership" anymore -- in other words, its leadership is hiding in an attempt to avoid blame.
DOGE no longer has ‘centralized leadership’ under White House tech team, personnel head says
The team that was altered to house DOGE — formerly the U.S. Digital Service — is also still doing its own technology work across agencies.

The decline of religion as a source of meaning in people's lives remains underrated as a factor shaping society. The need doesn't go away - they just seek it out elsewhere in (often false) health/wellness beliefs, (often highly polarized/conflictual) politics, etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/o...

Ah yes, because we have such stunning examples of that oh fuck it's the worst century of mass murders, the 20th.
The world would be far less violent and a better place if everyone was atheist.

Apropos my previous rant.

To the American public: I hate you.
Before DOGE, systems meant to serve millions of people were being run by a few harried employees using outdated systems. And now, after DOGE, they are being run by even fewer, even more harried employees on those same outdated systems!
So, DOGE, What Would You Say You Did Here?

Europeans love taxing food like the GOP loves cutting SNAP.

One of my most hardcore OG Progressive Era opinions is that taxation of food is inherently evil and harms those with the least the most due to its regressive nature.

Some prepared food carve outs could be permissible.
Are there any countries that actually have a single flat rate VAT or do they all eventually succumb to the temptation of doing fiddly carve out bullshit exemptions and differential rates
are you fucking serious

Broken clock. Blowing air all over the place is nasty and destructive to the hearing of the traveling public. Ban them!
At this point, the Washpost edit page is just trolling its readers.

This is today's actual house editorial.

Given that some baseball crank on this site spent all of Sunday being angry white guy over the Beatles, maybe we could skip looking at musician's opinions, which are often terrible. Paul McCartney, notably fucking awful. Lennon probably would have turned into RFKJr. The others are fine.

Atlanta is uniquely cursed. I blame Delta.
Two cities we're watching for travel issues – Atlanta, where severe weather will ramp up, especially this afternoon... and Chicago, where strong winds could cause flight problems.

Check with your air carrier if you're flying through ORD, MDW or ATL.

In the morning I'll go looking for some data on what was the value of pre 90s welfare law changes of food stamps/SNAP (bc they were actually stamps) in 2025 dollars/proportion of household spending. There was a barter system in place of below face value arbitrage back then. It was also before TANF.

I do wish we had national origin on all social media accounts. There's a millennial woman doing numbers on insta talking about how millennials showed up in yesterday's clothes and smelling of tequila but they showed up and ma'am that's a lie. I was there too. You invented mental health day!

12" mixes are like gorging yourself on something you liked until you thought you'd had enough and then you still could handle more.
the radio edit of "No More Tears (Enough is Enough) is 4:39, Barbra put an 8:19 cut on her album, and Donna put an 11:43 12" recording on hers. do you realize how TREMENDOUS material has to be for Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer to take it and roll it up like this in a coördinated attack!!!

One of the reasons Sweden's vacation law is centered on contiguous use over several weeks is the effect was so clear on people's well-being. 3 weeks in sequence was a norm pretty early.
