Finishing this book got me through the pandemic & made a dream come true!

A deep history of the agential autonomy of short narrative forms since 1700 – topos, lettre de cachet, fable, novella, fairy tale, proverb, commonplace, epiphany, enacted story, videotale …

Enjoying my close reading of all that is implied in Guillory calling Auerbach‘s and Sedgwick‘s readings ”most virtuoso hermeneutic performances.“

"Frye thought ‘myths’ would have been a better word for what Bachelard called complexes. … Binswanger said of B.’s ‘psychology’ that ‘we would call it an anthropology’ … I wonder if a looser definition might make real room for Bachelard, anthropology in the sense evoked by Lévi-Strauss or Frazer."
‘The magic in Bachelard’s work is often wonderful, but it may be even more remarkable for what it doesn’t include, doesn’t invite to the eclectic seminar.’

I am very excited that there is now an English translation of this important book. Christopher John Müller has done an amazing job. Thank you to both @morbuscriticus.bsky.social and Christopher for making this happen!

Experimented with a new fun pre-class assignment in advance of my 1950s Hollywood lecture today! I asked my students to explore the new Film Atlas database and write a short commentary on one of the 1950s widescreen format entries (i.e., Cinerama, CinemaScope, Rotoscope, Todd AO).

This is true unfortunately, and I can‘t believe nobody is willing to implement the necessary changes – It would be a win-win, stop the brain drain, and improve the overall quality of research and teaching.
German academia: great place to work? You should think twice before giving it a try: Permanent positions are very rare, most scholars have to drop out after some precarious years. @dianakwon.bsky.social has written a great piece about this for @nature.com and also talked to yours truly. #IchBinHanna
