What a story!

#MSH45 | Richard Lasher
You've been at a job long enough to know a decent colleague to chat with.

The more you get to know them, the more they share. What's fact or fiction? You don't know, but you listen.

Then there's one story that's so over the top—a bona fide lie. But then, a photo appears.
A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

Join the U.S. Geological Survey on an afternoon observation flight around Mount St. Helens.

You'll see highlights such as the steaming crater, the August dome, Spirit Lake, "The Steps," and the debris avalanche-buried North Fork Toutle River valley.

"Now that's an ash cloud."
— Paul Hogan, "Crocodile Dundee," when looking at a photo of the mammatus clouds of volcanic ash over Richland, Washington.
Volcanic ash clouds from the eruption of Mount St. Helens form mammatus-like patterns in the sky over Richland, Washington, more than 180 miles east of the volcano. Photographed by Don J. Easterbrook, University of Washington Libraries, Special Collections (Donald J. Easterbrook Photograph Collection, PH Coll 797, image EAS1008).

Recently on Instagram, someone associated with a local St. Helens institution contacted me with an image of what they had from Landsburg's car.

Incredibly, these cards survived the pyroclastic density flow in good condition. The thermal qualities of the blast are fascinating.
Two weathered yellow paper envelopes labeled **“Robert Landsburg Images”**, printed with a stylized camera-aperture logo and the photographer’s contact information in Portland, Oregon. The envelopes—believed to have belonged to photographer Robert Landsburg, who documented Mount St. Helens up to the moment of his death on May 18, 1980—are resting on a white surface beside a comb and other small objects. Another famous Mount St. Helens photographer from May 18, 1980, albeit with a much sadder ending than Richard Lasher's story.

Finding the January 1981 issue of National Geographic in my school's library was a moment I'll never forget. Landsburg's photos, even to a kid, felt uncomfortably close.

Seventeen days after the eruption, the 304th Air Force Reserve found Robert Landsburg three miles west of Mount St. Helens. In his ash-covered bag: camera, film, and ID—all shielded.

Published in National Geographic in 1981, his photos became iconic records of the eruption.
