One of the messed up things that ultimately drove me out of corporate software engineering was having tech debt catch up with you.
The performance metrics are based on revenue impact. This roughly translates to "deploy more features." But making new stuff is not the same as maintaining old stuff.

This also explains the obsession with outputs and metrics. We wrote some code. Users ran that code. God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.
Any conversation around what good running that code did to anyone is detracting from the Computer Purity and must be prevented from occurring.
