I have seen several commentators say that the issue of democracy did not resonate more because it is "too abstract." A survey we conducted last December offers a different possible explanation: Young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters want to improve our democracy, not just protect it.

In other words, 56% blame Trump or Republicans, 37% blame Democrats.

The government shutdown: Independents are more likely to blame either Republicans in Congress or President Trump over Democrats in Congress.

There definitely is screwing going on here, but I don't know about turning.

There is not a doubt in the world that there would be a large bipartisan majority in the House for an extension of the ACA tax credits. The real problem is that Johnson has no interest in bipartisanship and wants a Republican-only majority, which will mean soaring insurance costs.

In our own recent polling, a large majority of voters disapprove of Trump using the shutdown to push his agenda of mass firings and the termination of federal government programs.
geoffgarin.bsky.social
Only 33% of Americans support mass firings of federal workers, with declining support among Republican voters, per the new Reuters/IPSOS poll. These actions by Trump - a continuation of what happened earlier with Musk and DOGE - will create more blowback against Republicans in the shutdown fight.

Edward Whelan, a conservative legal scholar who served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice under Bush '43, questions the validity of Lindsey Halligan's appointment, and hence the validity of her indictments.

Republicans can end their shutdown and all the pointless pain it’s causing at any point.

Instead, they’re intent on raising your health care premiums and unleashing flight delays, missed paychecks, and chaos on Americans.

My statement with @markwarner.bsky.social on the Trump Administration’s malicious prosecution of New York Attorney General Letitia James:
"A few weeks ago, Trump forced Erik Siebert, a highly-qualified prosecutor with a sterling reputation, to resign as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia because he refused to bring trumped-up charges against James. Then, Trump installed to lead the Eastern District his personal lawyer Lindsey Halligan—a Florida insurance lawyer who is not licensed to practice law in Virginia and had prosecuted exactly zero cases in her life. By putting someone so unqualified in charge of one of the most important law enforcement offices in the country, Trump has made clear that he doesn’t care about keeping Virginians safe, only about weaponizing the justice system to punish his political opponents..." "...To prosecutors across America: the integrity of our justice system depends on your courage to resist political interference. History will remember those who stood firm in defense of the rule of law, and those who allowed themselves to be complicit in corrupt, politically-motivated prosecutions."

Trump's outrageous indictment of AG James has replaced the Gaza peace deal as the lead story in the news, and Trump's dangerous abuse of power to retaliate against his enemies is the much more important story about Trump right now.

He is an absolute lunatic, and a dangerous one.

The is 100% in response to Newsom and Pritzker demanding that the NGA take a stand. I assume Stitt does not want to preside over the dissolution of the NGA on his watch.

Neera on ACA premiums: "Once you’ve conceded this is a problem, then I don’t really understand why the argument is we need to deal with it later and not now."

Our new polling shows that a large majority of voters side with Democrats on the need for action now.

There is no one better than @neeratanden.bsky.social to explain the ins and outs of the shutdown, which she does expertly in her interview with @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social.

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

As more of these stories surface the bigger the backlash there will be to the stubborn refusal of Trump and Republicans to take action now to address the healthcare cost crisis.

at this point you have to acknowledge that there is no way that these guys don't try to mess with the 2026 midterms. there is absolutely no respect for the legitimacy of the opposition

Stephen Miller: "Eventually elections don’t carry the day because violence beats votes… When we see a muscular response from the federal government, it’s because we’re not going to let violence beat votes."

Is he implying federal intervention determines political legitimacy, not ballots or courts?

Among the thousands of lies Trump told during the 2024 campaign is that he was unfamiliar with Project 2025.
