You can tell things are going well in America because accounts with names like MovieTVFunZone are posting things like, "THE PIGS ARE KIDNAPPING CHILDREN AND PRIESTS. THE TREE OF LIBERTY DEMANDS TO BE WATERED"

With most psychedelic drugs, you never know what you're going to get. But this mysterious mushroom from China - without fail - causes users to hallucinate tiny people: crawling up walls, popping out from under furniture and marching under doors. www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Only recently described by science, the mysterious mushrooms are found in different parts of the world, but they give people the same exact visions.

Wow, this announcement is big news, even if I'm set for mouthpieces myself! (Big news in the saxophone world, at least.)

I play (second-hand) Theo Wanne mouthpieces on my tenor and soprano, and though they're pricy, they're the best I've ever used.

I’m sharing this video again because people don’t really get what these data centers and ai are doing to our planet and our communities. Especially Black communities because they were strategically placed there.

I need you to listen to these people.

For centuries, a “gossip” was a woman who attended another woman's delivery. The word was a corruption of “god-sib” or “god-sibling,” meaning “sister in the Lord.” The gossips offered support to mother & midwife. Only later did it become derogatory.

The main tune I worked on in my practice session today is this beautiful one:

Keeping myself honest. I did about 30 minutes of clarinet (and now can play a 3-octave G scale kinda reliably), some chromatic patterns, this, and a couple of Wayne Shorter tunes.

Ted Gioia on what he sees as an ongoing cultural shift responding to a lot of what's going on these days, which he terms "The New Romanticism":

Given how sick everyone's becoming of pseudo-AI being rammed down our throats, maybe he's onto something.

Holy shit, that’s just actual theft.
In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

I found the ep in PLURIBUS where Carol--white, American--meets 5 non-white, non-American survivors of the hivemind off-putting, but in a way that made me curious to see where Gilligan was going. Now that I have, I wrote about how empire, privilege, genAI, & resistance converge in the show's subtext:
Resisting the Hivemind: Pluribus, Generative AI, and Empire - Reactor
While its creator tell us that Pluribus is not about advent of generative AI, it's difficult not to spot the many places where the fledgling tech and extraterrestrial hivemind overlap.

The thing that kills me is how so many "experts" are so quick to blame Zoom for the learning deficits and not, you know, *the trauma of living through a badly mishandled pandemic.* Like, maybe with all that death and fear people were emotionally affected in ways that impact learning, guys?
"Learning loss is so substantial that even making the tests easier is not doing what it used to."

I've worked closely with undergrads for a decade now; there've been quiet but real tragedies unfolding in relationships with learning and skill growth. For the next few years too, if this is accurate.

Oh yeah, this post reminds me I haven't mentioned that I've just started learning clarinet. Total beginner. I find that I keep trying to default to sax fingerings, so I'm training myself not to. Fun challenge... well, fun for me. Maybe not for those within earshot of my practice room!
Here's a #caricature group by 18th-century society portraitist Joshua Reynolds, dating to around 1751.

It shows two Englishmen performing an impromptu concert for two friends, in view of Rome’s Pyramid of Cestius. Painted by Reynolds for private amusement, not public consumption...sadly.
