That is a good point too.
I was just impressed at the sc bc it was just a person's comment on a dumb op-ed but that & your point could definitely be the basis of a full-on article on this situation. It would be better than what the Op-ed person was saying. We need better explanations of things.

Awful op-ed but some very astute comments from the NYT readers.
Why isn’t Trump open to making deals on domestic policies with Democrats? I can think of a few reasons: (1) the GOP has demonized democrats so thoroughly over the past 20 or so years that to make a deal with democrats is to literally make a deal with the devil for many in Trump’s base; (2) Stephen Miller seems to control what domestic information Trump sees (he seems to only absorb information via television) and thus Miller pulls the strings on many domestic actions like ICE and sending troops to Portland (e.g., Trump being surprised when Oregon’s governor informed him that no, in fact, Portland is not on fire); and (3) GOP house and senate members have voluntarily rendered themselves utterly ineffective and so no pressure is put on Trump from anyone, anywhere to make a deal across the aisle. In other words, the broadly accepted goal of the GOP now is to punish Democrats. And Trump’s personal goal is for his family to make as much money as possible while President. I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.

Trump’s “Loyalty Oath” would let him and his unqualified bureaucrats run our colleges and universities. We must demand that our schools reject the regime’s blackmail attempts by committing to uphold freedom of speech and provide an affordable, safe education for all. 👇

Some Americans think making America weaker, poorer, more chaotic, less reliable, with fewer friends, worse relationships with democracies, and damaging international institutions America set up and benefited from is good.

Not sarcasm. I think they’re very wrong, but they’re getting what they want.

On NYT Home Page there's a Douthat column w/the headline "Trump's Foreign Policy is Succeeding. He Should Apply It's Lessons at Home." On what planet? Betraying our allies. Blowing up the global trading system. Embracing autocrats. Pulling back support for Ukraine. Helping to support Gaza slaughter.

If it's so terrible they could step down. In 2022, 31 Dem MOCs retired compared with 18 Reps. It was a very difficult thing to come back from bc it gave so much incumbent advantage to Reps. I guess the Dem caucus at that time was a pretty miserable gig bc it was obvious they'd lose the majority.

When feudal kings talk about "Antifa" or the "radical left," these are euphemisms for Americans who kept learning after high school and developed a positive vision for how our society could be, and these kings are insecure that if this vision spreads to more people, it'll manifest into a reality.

Here’s a rewrite using web of beliefs-based comms strategy...

While Texas burns, their troops are chasing ghosts in Illinois. This isn’t leadership, it’s abandonment.

Texans need relief, not theater. We stand ready to send them home, where they belong. Protecting Texans from fire and flood.

To move minds and hearts in the disinformation age, you need more than facts.

You need to rupture the belief web that justifies the stunt, and to reframe the moral terrain.

Pritzker’s post doesn’t do that. It doesn't spread. It doesn’t provoke. It doesn’t stick.

The military budget is $1 Trillion dollars, the largest military budget in US history. It has a $200 Billion slush fund of un-allocated funding.

Yet Trump said today, to "try and find money" within the Pentagon budget to pay our soldiers.

Is it on the "tariff shelf?"
