This Magnificat antiphon for Proper 27, Year C sets Luke 20:38 NRSVUE from the Sunday gospel. It is a newly-composed setting in tonus peregrinus and so can be sung with the Magnificat setting in Hymnal 1982, S 242.🕯️

In his _Prayer Book Office_ (1980), Howard Galley intentionally makes green seasons extra green, not only with generic "anytime" antiphons for psalms and canticles but even by skipping the weekly collect on weekdays. Is there something to be said for this? From his introduction:🕯️

Finding no preexisting antiphon settings for this coming Sunday's Gospel reading (Luke 19:1-10, Zaccheus was a wee little man), I've written this one that can serve as a Magnificat antiphon for Proper 26C. Now, there ARE All Saints' antiphons out there, but that's for another post. 🕯️

My Magnificat antiphon for the week of Proper 25 C is an adaptation of the Salisbury Antiphoner chant for the 11th Sunday after Trinity, which sets Luke 18:13 (from this Sunday’s Gospel reading); I changed the language to NRSVUE and adjusted the melody a bit to fit it. 🕯️

Getting this done early: a Magnificat antiphon for the week of RCL Proper 24C, on Luke 18:7a from this Sunday's Gospel. I've found no chant settings of Luke 18:1-8 in the usual places, so here's a workable new setting in Mode 5. 🕯️

A Magnificat antiphon for the week of RCL Proper 23, from this week's Gospel reading on Jesus's Cleansing of Ten Men-With-A-Skin-Disease (Luke 17:11-19). This is taken straight from the Salisbury Antiphoner: it's the antiphon for the 14th Sunday after Trinity, p. 89. 🕯️

Normally I don’t catch myself feeling this way until the November propers, but boy am I spiritually hungry for Advent. Anyone else? 🕯️

Bishop Sarah Mullally has been named the next Archbishop of Canterbury. What gifts does she bring to the role? What does this mean for the Church of England and the Anglican Communion? Helen King ( @helenking.bsky.social ) & Andrew McGowan ( @praxeas.bsky.social ) share their thoughts ⚓

A Magnificat antiphon on Luke 17:5-6, from the Gospel reading for RCL Proper 22C. I've searched for and cannot find any existing antiphons on this text, so until I find something better, here's a new one with a typical Mode 1 melody. 🕯️

Looking ahead to next week, I've found a great little Lenten Prime antiphon on a text that RCL appoints on Proper 21C (Luke 16:25): "Child, remember that you received good things during your lifetime, and Lazarus in like manner evil things.”Graz, Universitätsbibliothek, 29, 113v.

My priest is Mtr. Katherine Heitmann, and her sermons are amazing. I'm resharing her sermon from last Sunday because it dealt with the Gospel reading, and its context in recent events, and the concept of love of enemy with sensitivity and elegance. Please check it out (26:19-43:48 in the video). ⚓

One good Magnificat antiphon option for Proper 20C is this one on Luke 16:3-4 from the Salisbury Antiphoner, where it's appointed for the ninth Sunday after Trinity. 🕯️

Good interview of @frutledge.bsky.social by @benjamindcrosby.bsky.social

Few people have made a bigger impact on my theology of the cross and my preaching of the Word of God than Rev. Rutledge.

Her insistence on God as the subject; as the Actor on the human stage is just so indispensably true.

As fascists hijack Christianity to serve their political aims, it is more important than ever for actual Christians to

* Pray fervently for the renewal of the world

* Follow Jesus as Lord

* Proclaim the Good News of God’s grace and mercy in the public square

* Be merciful

* Reject evil

I have a feeling there were quite a few spot-on sermons from Episcopal pulpits yesterday. This was one of them. youtu.be/wz4C81WqbXA?... 🕯️

Here's something that works great as a Magnificat antiphon for Proper 19C: this antiphon from the Salisbury Antiphoner for the Third Sunday after Trinity, based on Luke 15:8 (which is in RCL's Sunday's Gospel reading coming up). It paraphrases a Mag. ant. on the same text in the Liber Usualis. ⚓

I see a good bit of conversation on Bluesky this week about how to preach this week's gospel reading. Because there don't seem to be existing antiphons on this text, I've sketched a new Mode 1 Magnificat antiphon for Proper 18C on the especially challenging Luke 14:26. 🕯️

Powerful stuff from this great riff on the Collect for Proper 17: “It’s easy to confuse religion with comfort, to think of church as the place that makes us feel good, but in fact, church is the place we practice religion… (1/2)

For a Proper 17C Magnificat Antiphon, I like this lovely setting of Luke 14:11, an antiphon in evangelio for the 12th Sunday after Pentecost in Einsiedeln 611 (143v-144r). 🕯️The structure of the Latin makes it easy to adapt this melody to the NRSVUE English.

Magnificat antiphon for Sunday, Proper 16 (closest to August 24), Year C. Text: Luke 12:51. I haven’t found existing chant antiphons on the RCL Gospel reading for Proper 16C, so this mode 1 antiphon is homemade.🕯️

Just noticed this morning that Hymnal 1982 only has one version of "Away in a manger": the one with the tune most Americans only hear if they tune into the BBC Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve. Was "Cradle Song" really the tune most Episcopalians preferred at the time? ⚓

Magnificat antiphon for Sunday, Proper 15 (closest to August 17), Year C. Text: Luke 12:51. Because I can't find any preexisting antiphons on the RCL Gospel reading for Proper 15C, I sketched this one myself, based on the sort of Ur-melody that many tone 4 chants follow.🕯️
