Great piece exploring connections between football and civic resistance in contemporary Hungary - with my modest contribution. 🫣
Wrote something for the latest edition of the Blizzard I did, about Peter Gulácsi and the ramifications of speaking out in Orbán’s Hungary
Issue 59 of The Blizzard, edited by @jonawils.bsky.social, is out now and full of excellent long-form football writing from @alexkeble.bsky.social, @stuartroyclarke.bsky.social, @johnduerden.bsky.social and more

5/ As someone researching Hungarian nationalism & politics with 🇭🇺🇬🇧 citizenship, I watch this closely.

Digital platforms are reshaping how autocrats maintain power - and how citizens resist.

The 2026 election will test whether media pluralism can survive in digital spaces.

4/ Orbán knows this is a threat.

He's now doing interviews with right-wing podcasters.
He brought podcasters to meet Trump in Washington.
But it's not working with young voters.

You can't co-opt a medium built on authenticity and independence.
November 28, 2025 at 3:38 PM
3/ This matters because younger voters (under 40) are rejecting Fidesz.

58% support opposition Tisza party (led by former Fidesz insider Péter Magyar)
Only 17% back Orbán's Fidesz

Podcasts are where young Hungarians are getting alternative information.
November 28, 2025 at 3:37 PM
2/ But YouTube has become a refuge.

Podcast consumption TRIPLED to 36% of Hungarians in 2024 (93% via YouTube video format).

Independent platforms like Partizan & Adam Nagy's shows are in the top 5.

Financial independence from government advertising = editorial independence.
November 28, 2025 at 3:37 PM
1/ Context: Since 2010, Orbán has built a sprawling pro-government media empire - ~500 outlets under KESMA Foundation.

Traditional media is captured. Public broadcasting is propaganda. Independent journalists face surveillance, smears, blocked access.

It's an "informational autocracy."

From @Reuters: Hungarian podcasters are pushing back against Orbán's media dominance.

This is a crucial development ahead of next year's election - and it reveals something important about how authoritarian media is being challenged. 🧵 on why this matters:

3/George's PhD research is helping change that - examining how men navigate body projects and challenging the assumption that body image is only a women's issue.

Proud to support this work. This is what research impact looks like.

2/But the most powerful part? The discussions. People had questions. They had experiences to share.

This tells us something important: the silence around men's body image issues isn't because men don't want to talk. It's because we haven't created enough safe spaces for those conversations.
November 26, 2025 at 7:26 PM
1/We watched "Chasing Adonis" - a powerful film about male body image - with the creators. We heard research on men's body image and disordered eating. William Colgrave from First Steps ED shared practical ways healthcare, schools, and gyms can better support men.
November 26, 2025 at 7:24 PM
What happens when you create space for honest conversations about men's mental health?

People show up. They engage. They share.

That's what happened at the event George Mycock and Christian Edwards organized at University of Worcester last week on men, muscle, and mental health.

How do you collect ethnic identity data equitably when communities have been harmed by data collection historically?

Our project with Gypsy, Roma, & Traveller communities tackled this question through genuine co-production, working WITH communities.

We examine 4 paradigms in disability PE: 🔬 Postpositivist 🧩 Constructivist
⚖️ Critical 🤝 Participatory
Each makes different ontological, epistemological & axiological assumptions—with real implications for practice.

AXIOLOGY = role of values
Research is never value-neutral. Questions:

Whose voices are privileged?
What's the purpose of this knowledge?
Who benefits?

Especially critical in disability research where power dynamics are ever-present.
November 24, 2025 at 12:06 PM
EPISTEMOLOGY = beliefs about knowledge

Can researchers objectively measure disabled students' experiences?
Or must we co-construct knowledge with them?
Who gets to be the "knower"?

Different paradigms = different answers
November 24, 2025 at 12:06 PM
ONTOLOGY = beliefs about reality
In disability PE research:

Is disability an objective medical condition?
Or a socially constructed experience?
Or both?

Your answer shapes everything that follows.
