Between my column a few weeks ago and this today, California's Serbian-American community has really been stepping up to promote SB 79 in the pages of CalMatters.

Commentary:

The governor shouldn’t take housing advice from Los Angeles. He should sign SB 79, lead the state forward and send a clear message: CA’s future won’t be held back by NIMBY politics. https://cal.news/48Q3q2m

Opinion | Los Angeles housing permits are tanking, yet leaders want Newsom to veto a major reform
Signing SB 79 should be an easy call, despite pressure from L.A. Newsom should know better than to let L.A. dictate state housing policy.

Three months ago, @gavinnewsom.bsky.social correctly warned us that failing to address our housing crisis would cost us people’s trust, and that the entire reputation of the State of California was on the line.

Call him now and urge him to follow through by signing #SB79! ☎️ (916) 445-2841

Please call the Governor and ask him to sign SB 79!

A bunch of toxic LA NIMBYs are whining about SB 79, the amazing housing bill the CA legislature passed recently.

It's on the governor's desk, and reportedly he's getting cold feet. Hey @gavinnewsom.bsky.social, please have some spine on the most important issue in your state. Just sign it.

I hope California YIMBY is considered a “US YIMBY” org

Their marquee SB 79 would have allowed transit agencies to build commercial uses at stations irrespective of local zoning

This section was cut out by housers who want to preserve sites for LIHTC

As usual, Alon knows nothing of our work.

Thanks, Derek, for correctly noting what California YIMBY and Sen. Wiener were trying to achieve.

Who else had been the subject of unrelenting attacks for 24 years that managed to stick w/ non-Republicans?

Many Dems believed in nonsense about Hillary!

Obvs, life isn’t fair, politics least of all, but Hillary really was uniquely vulnerable.
hanlon.bsky.social
One of the reasons Hillary was a weak candidate is there was, in fact, a vast right wing conspiracy out to get her.

Decades of relentless negative coverage worked!

(I can’t read the Vox article, but per the NPR piece, I recalled her use of “deplorable” accurately.)

I strongly agree with every single word of this. Public disorder is toxic to the pro urbanist political project and we must take it seriously.

Wrote about how California needs to get serious about the urban disorder our failure to build housing has created.

I agree that approach can’t be the only long term strategy - we ultimately need to encourage fewer people to be shitty or disempower the shitty people.

My point is that many tactics employed to accomplish the later goals are counterproductive. It’s a genuinely hard problem set to solve!

Reduce costs of homebuilding, mostly through the reduction of fees and expensive requirements imposed on home builders.
hanlon.bsky.social
It’s often very good advice!

Hillary was right that many Trump supporters are “deplorable,” but she never should have said it.
hanlon.bsky.social
We still have a lot of work to do, but the tide is turning, and the pro-housing forces are winning.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make SB 79 possible.

The future of California is looking bright!

2025 has been a hell of a year.

@cayimby.bsky.social accomplished 2 of our 3 founding policy goals: exempt infill housing from CEQA and legalize housing near train stations.

I also had my first kid.
