It was a pleasant surprise when I moved here!

Well, now you say it, they did introduce those one sheet at a time dispensers last year, and mostly get rid of paper hand towels. That'll sort out the £140 million

The get-out here is posters (which don't seem universal) saying period products can be found at student services. I don't feel this makes them 'easily obtained, in a way that respects people’s dignity', as per the law - particularly not for low-paid staff - so I am going to look into it.

For people outside Scotland: public bodies have been mandated by law since 2021 to provide free period products to anyone who needs them. In practice, that's created a wider culture where pubs and cafes tend to have them too www.gov.scot/policies/pov...

Latest sign of our financial crisis: no more free period products in university toilets. This one feels especially mean.

That's wonderful, congratulations Bruno!

From a different perspective, my dad - usually a reflection of the views of middle England and whatever the Times wants its readers to think - presented Blair's involvement in Gaza to me recently as a comforting sign. Obv this is nuclear levels of wrong, but unfortunately I assume he's not alone.

In July, naturalist Soumyadip Santra was on a trip to the Indian Sundarbans when he witnessed an unusual scene: a fishing cat jumped on an adult monitor lizard and dragged it away toward some bushes.

Santra’s photographs of the fishing cat in action captured a rare bit of natural history.

A good few friends who want vocational training in traditional crafts have found they can't do it in the UK! Far be it from me to suggest that Glasman & co are only interested in vocational routes as a stick to beat universities with, rather than out of genuine concern for this form of education...

fwiw, our crisis is largely management opportunism. We have some of the biggest reserves in the sector and don't have a deficit; in fact, we have a healthy surplus. We have, however, been plugging the gaps in tuition fee income in the usual dubious ways. www.ucuedinburgh.org.uk/ju-finance-w...

For Universities to not be ready for or responsive to this kind of predictable, documented, targeted harassment of faculty is a choice www.thenation.com/article/soci...
Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the “Gaza, Indigeneity, Resistance” class appeared to be recording them, possibly to “gather their names and comments” and intimidate them. “We believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,” Droubi said. “That ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.” Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened.

This new article by the excellent Sara Farris looks like it will also be relevant to Environmental Humanities, where there is an increasing turn to theoretically shallow invocations of 'care' as one of the answers to our environmental predicament.
