the part that matters, in my nonbeliever opinion, is that the messiah was supposed to bring violent revolution. he chose to accept violence rather than perpetrate it, because the kingdom of heaven can't be built through violence. his suffering isn't currency; it's the price of living his beliefs

so if THAT'S the part you emphasize, how miserable and painful of an experience it was, it falls a bit flat -- because yes, I'm sure it was, but humans do unspeakably painful and violent things to each other pretty often actually. you hear stories about POWs held for YEARS

okay here's the thing though: I'm reasonably certain that junko furuta suffered more than jesus. there wasn't the whole "betrayed by your own people" thing but the sheer arbitrariness makes up for that, I think. I bet there are a lot of people who have suffered worse than the crucifixion
