"2000 Criminals", published in the '68 CS annual, is one of my all-time favourite Captain Scarlet stories. Its heartstoppingly grim and abrupt end has the tell-tale signs of cut material. Motton's script re-orders key events of the story, but turns out the finale was *always* shockingly bleak!

Since we're all in a Captain Scarlet mood, I'm diving back into David Motton's scripts. Some of the material that gets cut from the annual stories is kind of wild. Love how Colonel White is so accepting of the Mysterons' stranglehold of humanity's deceased.
Script extract from the "2000 Criminals" story from Captain Scarlet by David Motton. Highlight of the extract is: "As you know, Scarlet, dead men have a habit of returning to life as Mysteron agents."

Finally realised I never saw Rediffusion's OBJECT Z in 1965 because it was on opposite BBC1's science magazine TOM TOM, which was shown after ROBINSON CRUSOE and before THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT - a pretty solid line-up. So glad #BFI have now released the OBJECT Z DVD!

Watching OBJECT Z (1965) on #BFI disc, I'm surprised Rediffusion got away with this blatant product placement.

Track down this annual. They're readily available on eBay. It's a brilliant anthology of comic strips, short stories and in-universe features. That and the '69 annual are pretty much the combined series bible of Captain Scarlet.

Thing I just learned. “Lede” as in “bury the lede” is a deliberate misspelling of “lead”. It’s part of a lexicon of misspellings used for annotations by journalists and subs so that notes on copy are removed, rather than included in the body of the text by accident. Others include “dek” and “hed”.

This is a PSA for Blueskiers rediscovering Captain Scarlet:

1. Electricity is the one thing that can kill both Mysterons and Captain Scarlet himself.

2. We can't be certain how unkillable Scarlet is, because Gerry Anderson never fully considered the body horror implications of his own creation.

Is Captain Wade in OBJECT Z any relation to Major Colin Wade (#RayArmstrong) in the 1972 series of FREEWHEELERS? I'll leave that to FREEWHEELERS fans.
harrydobermann.bsky.social
Watching the #BFI Blu-ray of OBJECT Z, the Special Branch officer Captain Wade is played by #TerenceDonovan - later of MONEY MOVERS (1978) during the period when he had to call himself Terence J. Donovan to stop people confusing him with the Swinging London photographer.

To be fair, Lenny Henry would have been around 12 years old at the time. We all stole our jokes at that age.

It was 53 years ago today a momentous event occurred that would change my life, though I didn't realize it at the time — for ton that date Mighty World of Marvel #1 was published, launching a line of weekly UK reprints of Marvel comics, which I was eventually hired to edit on June 24, 1974.
The front cover to The Mighty World of Marvel #1, which is dated October 7, 1972 and cost 5p. Pictured are The Hulk, The Thing, Spider-Man, The Human Torch, Mister Fantastic, and the Invisible Woman.

Watching BFI disc of OBJECT Z (1965) from Rediffusion, in the rare position of having next to no idea what it's about. Find myself in the same situation of an adult in 1965 being surprised by how intense this children's programme is.

imagining the cleaning lady standing in shock as all seventeen fall one after the other through the door of a cupboard which could surely never have contained them in the first place
