I finally got around to listening to @antheabutler.bsky.social’s excellent conversation with Fr. James Martin, S.J. on his podcast. Thoughtful, smart, and interesting reflections here. Makes me wish I could take a class with her!

Always knew there was a reason I hate the phrase "Just do it"
God, a thousand times this.

That's the thing with dopamine being tied to task initiation - there's a set of gears that won't - CAN'T - engage in my brain, but none of my problems are with analysis.

I can be fully aware of all the necessary steps, and stressing about starting, and just... not.

A satisfying answer to a vexing question: Ruth's Chris Whathouse, now?
I LEARNED THE ANSWER TO THIS

Chris's Steakhouse was a New Orleans landmark

Chris Matulich periodically got bored, sold it, waited for the new owner to fail, and bought it back cheap

The sale conditions: Can't move it, can't change the name

He did this six times

Then he sold it to Ruth Fertel
what did ruth mean when she said her steakhouse was "chris"

You need this moment of sweetness
I just got back from a walk. While I was walking through the park, a little white boy and his father flagged me down from the very other end of the park. Now to be fair, I have on my hat on, so I’m easy to spot lol. The little boy drew me this. A month ago. He has been waiting to see me again.

Always worth reading @dieworkwear.bsky.social , and today is no exception.
JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧵

@mminthecity.bsky.social, this might be of interest. "Media literacy has been on the decline in the United States for decades... We are simply not teaching people how to engage with media in a critical way anymore, if we ever were."

In case you needed to hear this
when I catch myself cussing myself out I spend equal time - out loud, if I was cussing myself out loud - going "that's not true, you are a person who deserves compassion and wouldn't talk to someone else that way."
Remember always that a vital part of cultivating compassion is to practice compassion for yourself.

For people with trauma, mental illnesses, depressive personalities, and other emotional problems this can be really hard. But it's made such a difference for me.

“Why are traumatized people so MISERABLE?”

“Too much disappointment teaches the system that ‘wanting leads to pain,’ and so it stops responding to potential rewards. … Biologically, it’s an adaptive silencing of the very circuits that make us feel alive.” www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/an-i...
How Chronic Disappointment Rewires the Brain
Chronic disappointment can train the brain to expect pain instead of reward. Restoring hope means reawakening dopamine through small actions, enriched environments, and new desire.

Everyone please diligently check your candy this year. I cracked open a snickers bar and not only did I find a copper ingot, but it was of poor quality.

Worse still, when my man Nanni confronted my neighbor about it, he was treated with disdain.
