What nobody tells you, during the moral panic of 12-year-old girls obsessing over skincare, is that it only lasts a year or so.

Proud to say I now have a 14-year-old who simply does not wash.

If you're doing your Christmas shopping online, you really need to get ordering now. So why not look at the online SHOP I've had an absolutely delightful time building. The Jenny Holzer silver bag! Classy socks that actually look like an amazing present! The Viz annual! shopmy.us/shop/heawood

Just to say, if you know someone parenting a kid alone, especially a small one, see if you can buy a present that the kid can give to their parent. Even take the kid shopping so they can choose. It's not even about the money - the parent might happily pay for someone else to do this kindness.

Manufacturing the Age of Consent
Noam Chomsky’s emails to Jeffrey Epstein display none of the fawning chatter found from, say, Larry Summers. And he does not appear to have been co-opted by whatever access Epstein provided.

What the Noam Chomsky–Jeffrey Epstein E-mails Tell Us
Chomsky has often suffered fools, knaves, and criminals too lightly. Epstein was one of them. But that doesn’t mean Chomsky was part of the “Epstein class.”

I, the person least likely to write a gift guide, have written a bloody gift guide. Fortunately it contains unsuitable gossip about the time I went to Fatboy Slim's house in Brighton and the sex boots designed by Jarvis Cocker's wife for which I am prepared to kill: substack.com/home/post/p-...

I've gone mad and done a thing to do with shopping. This is out of character.

My kids woke up so excited this morning for the first night of Hannukah and now yet again we have a festival where I’m very conflicted about whether it’s safe to take them to synagogue to celebrate. Communities shouldn’t have to live like this.

Question for people who watch Stranger Things: when you get dressed up for a party and your daughter says you look like a Demogorgon, is that... good?

Mossbourne have always been very open about this, is the thing. I'm very glad about the reportage and the investigation but you simply have to go to their open days and they'll tell you this is what they do. It's why we moved away from the particular school in this picture. My kid woulda been toast.
This story from yesterday didn't perhaps get the attention it should have. It's utterly shocking. It follows dogged reporting by the Observer (in its pre-sale era), which was repeatedly rejected by the academy federation concerned.

Can anyone think of a hotel in London that has character (like Hazlitts) but also a swimming pool? It seems an impossible quest.

Intrigued by the concept of hostile bids. Next time I see a book that I'd like to have written I'm going to launch a hostile bid to be its author. Authors: get ready to fight me.
Breaking News: Paramount made an offer worth $108 billion for Warner Bros. Discovery days after the company agreed to a deal with Netflix.

I have a child investment ISA that I sometimes pay into for my daughter's future. No great plan, not regularly funded, very spasmodic. Just went through all my payments and it seems I have, over many years, exclusively paid into it in the winter. Not a thought for her future in summer! Fascinating!

Talk to me about sleep tracking. Has anyone had any success with a mat that goes under your mattress, an oura ring, your phone, what have I missed? Not for me but to see if an exhausted loved one is perhaps missing most of their REM sleep or somesuch? Thankyou xxxx

I've got this wild idea where we encourage children and adults to create art, music, literature, film and fashion, luxuriating in our own disciplined, studied brilliance - our actual culture - and it makes this country rich. Instead of constantly hunting for weak spots to suck the blood from.
