I think there are four basic grids that crosswords tend to be based on. I don't know if they have names, but this is what I call them:
The "obvious" grid, where the entire outer border is white, and black cells form a grid within them. This is called the Waffle grid. The offset version of the Waffle grid — where every cell around the border is unchecked. This is called the Castle grid, as it kind of resembles crenelated walls. The "Bellows" grid has a smooth top and bottom like the Waffle grid, and jagged sides like the Castle grid. The "Bellows" grid is just the Accordion grid on its side. It has smooth sides like the Waffle grid, and a jagged top and bottom like the Castle grid.
