Scholars in Mesopotamia continued to study Sumerian nearly 2000 years after it stopped being spoken, and well after Aramaic replaced Akkadian as the language of everyday life. In this late 1st millennium BCE tablet the scribe Bēl-upaqqa wrote a list a Sumerian entries and their Akkadian translations

#EpigraphyTuesday offers us this beautiful obelisk in the #BritishMuseum with an #inscription in #Phoenician from the C4 BCE. Our own script derives from these letters, passing first through archaic Greek and Latin. When this was carved, those alphabets had already split off. #AncientBluesky 🏺
OBELISK WITH PHOENICIAN INSCRIPTION, C4 BCE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This refined and elegant epigraphy is Phoenician, a language spoken in the coastal cities of the Levant and in Carthage. The obelisk is a funerary stela found in a cemetery in Kition in Crete. It says "This pillar which Arish, chief of the brokers, erected to his father Parz, chief of the brokers, son of Menahem, chief of the brokers, son of Mashal, chief of the brokers, son of Parsi, chief of the brokers (or the brothers?), to his mother Shamzebaal of Azar, chief of the prefects (?) are their? resting place for ever." The Phoenicians were mad for commerce and the title "chief of the brokers" meant something like "head commercial agent". This script, in which letters represent separate vowels and consonants, and not ideograms or syllables, was functional and adaptable: our own alphabet derives from it.

For the Palestinian people, psychic life is just as much a site of struggle for liberation as social life. Palestinians are persistently refused psychological amplitude, characteristics easily granted to those who are never worried they might fall out of what is constituted as the category of the human. Abdaljawad Omar’s writings in English published since October 7, 2023 (as well as writings by other Palestinians, other Arabs, and those of Palestinian descent) offer means of understanding material resistance in relation to the terrain of the psyche. Omar offers distinctive accounts of mourning, loss, and ruins, as well as of how settler colonialism reorganizes experiences of time and relations between past, present, and future. The article reads Omar’s writings against other accounts of mourning and of psychic phenomena that are indebted to psychoanalysis. Omar’s analyses of Palestinians’ resistance to unfreedom and annihilation open up other ways of understanding the psychic vicissitudes of those who suffer, grieve, and struggle to exit a colonial condition characterized by the colonizer’s repeated attempts to break psychic worlds as well as erase bodily life. Understandings of psychic life that do justice to how Palestine is redrawing the world are central to the work of ‘cracking history open’.
