yea i wasn't thinking of Friendship when I said that, and I think you're right. At the same time, when I watch Friendship, I don't find myself straightforwardly laughing-at the Tim Robinson character. There's a kind of alienation from self that I think it's exploring, or at least that I vibe with

in someone's head vs. in everyone else's perspective. I think there are some people who derive humor from like, mocking the behavior of someone who's just socially awkward, (a lot of r/cringe is about bullying the neurodiverse) but i think successful cringe comedy does have an element of mocking

with the caveat that i don't think humor is really all that well understood, and most "why is this funny" explanations feel somewhat wrong to me, I think it has to do with the juxtaposition. in a cringe comedy situation, you are facing a kind of extreme and sudden juxtaposition of what is happening
