Treat: I commissioned art of this once! They like to read books together, ideally by a fire to keep warm in the mountains of Varley. Sometimes Hubert peaks over and gets a bit flustered at what she’s reading. Bernadetta likes to do her sewing while Hubert has 3 am coffee.

(2/2) Her extra pair of eyes and hands end up saving his life. Hubert is a lot more ruthless, more reckless, when it’s his own war. but her presence forces him to be more careful, and he finds that he’s a lot more successful with her there…and much more lethal, which is icing on the cake.

Trick: Bernadetta absolutely demanded to be brought along. It wasn’t because she wanted to fight—not at first, anyway. She just didn’t want to be alone, and she didn’t want him to be alone either. I think her involvement is actually to Hubert’s benefit (1/2)

2. how do these two unwind after a long day?

like, genuinely, spending time in their shared garden tending to the plants and flowers and all that. being with bernie has gotten hubert flowerpilled and gardenmaxxed and he finds it relaxing to tend to his plant children and do manual labor outside.

1. yes, i think bernie helps fight that post-canon war, whether or not the two of them are together (unlikely) or miserably mutually pining for each other (way more likely) when it starts.

bernie's probably sent around the continent to gather intel using flora and fauna research as a front :)

ふたりには平和で穏やかな日々を享受してのんびり暮らしてほしいので、上手くいかなかった場合のことは考えたくない（けれど創作者視点で見るとそういう悲劇もありうるとは思う）

ANさん、私も同じような考えですね！ヒューベルトは一人で戦いたいと思っていたのに、ベルが一緒に戦うことを申し出て、最終的に彼女の友情が彼の命を救う、という展開になると思います。ヒューベルトが一人で戦えば、きっと苦しみ、死んでしまうかもしれないけれど、ベルの慈悲の心が彼を守り、最終的にはより幸せにしてくれると思います。

oh!! it’s wip Wednesday!!! here’s something I’m working on for Hubernie Halloweekend!

His arms settle around her body, heavy and cold, pulling Bernadetta flush with his chest. At present, however, the slim frame and bony features she had adored for years register to her senses as not unlike a cage.
He smelled wrong, she thought.
Terror courses through Bernadetta's veins. If she were right, and this was indeed an Agarthan puppeteering Hubert's flesh, then the real Hubert, the man she had fought beside for nearly a decade, was dead, or desperately close to it.
"My love," the man with the face of Hubert bids her,
"Will you not embrace me?"
Bernadetta swallows hard. Hubert scarcely addressed her so endearingly...and yet, for just a moment, the words soothe her, quell the fear that has tightened every muscle in her body.

Slowly, carefully, she wraps her arms around him. As she does, she works a dagger free from her sleeve.
"There now...don't you feel safer, Bernadetta?"
Bernadetta's grip tightens on the handle.
"Yes," she whispers softly. "Th-Thank you."
The broad expanse of his back is achingly familiar, each bone readily palpable, even beneath layers of clothing. She traces his scapula, as if trying to memorize its perfect shape, before plunging her blade between his shoulder blades.
