Disgruntled anarcho-geologist.
It makes me geologically and mineralogically sad that Aotearoa/NZ doesn't have any large deposits of quick clay for me to poke and play with, but it also makes me Geotechnically Relieved that we don't have quick clays to make our already myriad landslide hazards worse:

Insights for Making Quick Clay Landslides Less Quick - Eos
In a quick clay landslide, solid soil liquefies suddenly, sometimes washing over entire towns. New modeling examines what kinds of salts could help stabilize these clays.

The call is coming from inside the house. Authoritarian systems attract authoritarian people, which includes those who are authoritarian abusers. There's no philosophy/religion/political system that prevents you from being a dickhead, but many systems are built to encourage and accept it.

The only current cost effective and functionally appropriate use of Generative AI in the language, image and video field is to solve wages and democracy, by the elimination of both in favour of authoritarianism: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

It's difficult to stress just how badly it goes for repressive regimes when they publicly hurt or kill people that aren't, in some sense, acceptable targets. It happened in Poland when Anna Walentynowicz was fired for illegal union activity: when some weirdo intellectual is persecuted, it's kinda
i think these absolutely deranged right-wingers have convinced themselves that the average American believes that it's acceptable to publicly execute nice white mothers because they have pronouns in their bios

i also think this is a gross misrreading of actual public opinion
they really do think that "she had PRONOUNS" and "She was A LESBIAN" will cause people to suddenly go "hm yes, it was justified, what a disgusting person she was, she deserved it" don't they

This I think gets at this deep feeling of dread I’m experiencing in the pit of my stomach.

I’ve long held that the parallel system change to our time isn’t WWI or WWII, it’s the European Wars of Religion.

Re-sharing for the new year, which is also an election year! If you agree, help us out by emailing your local MP asking why Labour and National have not yet signed this letter or committed to regulating AI deployment in NZ. #nzpol
We’ve published an Open Letter calling on NZ leaders to deliver risk-based AI regulation & a national oversight body. AI has huge potential, but harms (deepfakes, gendered abuse, bias) are real and rising. Read the Letter (and sign it if you agree!) #nzpol

What the eugenicist cyberphrenosexologist dating coaches are are up to these days:
If you made a Venn diagram of every weird person I knew in Silicon Valley during the first dot-com boom, centrifuged it, extracted the pellet, and re-suspended it in high-proof eugenics with a splash of AI, you'd end up with something like this.

It'll take a strong stomach to read this "gift" link.

Ok, everyone, what book is sacred enough to you to get sworn in on?
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

See also the fact that so much AI is still relying on a large Mechanical Turk workforce from the global south, with these educational language styles, for much of it's moderation and training data corpus so of course it sounds like these workforces:

this book was immensely useful, both for myself and for people I know who needed to come to terms with historical abuse.
Monthly reminder to read "Why does he do that?" because many people are bullied growing up & we don't turn into abusers. The narrative these people are victims is perverse to the goal of stopping abuse because it's not only false but contributes to the cycle.
