Mainers, it's absolutely essential to video ICE. These have provided evidence in cases that led to judges restricting ICE in Chicago and, more recently, Minnesota. In the decision released yesterday, a MN judge ruled that ICE violated people's First and Fourth amendment rights. #mepolitics

BREAKING — Mark Dion, Mayor of Portland, Maine just released this media statement re: ICE coming to the Portland and Lewiston. He says "While we respect the law, we challenge the need for a paramilitary approach to the enforcement of federal statutes."

Full statement shared with me:
“Our community is anxious and fearful regarding the understanding that ICE is planning to send agents to Portland and Lewiston next week. We are a welcoming city. There is no evidence of unchecked criminal activity in our community requiring a disproportionate presence of federal agents. In that view, Portland rejects the need for the deployment of ICE agents into our neighborhoods. While we respect the law, we challenge the need for a paramilitary approach to the enforcement of federal statutes. The consequence of law enforcement should not be chaos and violence, which only results in making Portland less safe.” “The City Council and I stand, not apart, but with our lawfully admitted immigrant and refugee communities. I urge our residents to look out for one another. Know your rights and have a plan of action if ICE stops you on the street, visits your home, or arrives at your business or place of employment. As a reminder, Portland Police does not cooperate with ICE and they do not participate in enforcing federal immigration law. If you decide to protest or demonstrate, keep your efforts peaceful and consistent with the expectations for lawful behavior that we all share.”

A source says local police were requested to “protect” ICE agents during raids, which will involve over 200 federal agents. Currently, the source says, there are 50 ICE agents in place. Anyone arrested will likely be processed at the ICE facility in Scarborough.

Boothbay Register letter to the editor: Dear Editor: I regularly call Senator Susan Collins’ office. I’ll admit, the first time I picked up the phone, I was nervous … But I want to say this: every time I have called, the staff in Senator Collins’ office have been courteous and respectful. They answer the phone. They listen. And that matters to me. What has grown increasingly frustrating is the widening gap between those respectful conversations and any visible action or response from the Senator herself. My most recent call was on Jan. 6, 2026, just after the holiday break -- one of many, but representative of a clear pattern. On Christmas Eve, ICE agents violently detained a pastor in Lewiston. He was in the country legally, produced documentation, and was later released -- but the damage to his family and congregation was already done. I checked Senator Collins’ website. There was no statement. I asked what the Senator’s official position was on ICE and its operations, nationally and here in Maine. The staffer told me there was no statement available, but my concerns would be shared. This week, ICE shot and killed an American citizen in Minneapolis. As of the time of this letter, there is still no public response from Senator Collins. Meanwhile, ICE recruitment ads are airing in Maine, advertising a $50,000 signing bonus. I find myself asking a question I never thought I would need to ask: Is this what we are paying for? Federal agents terrorizing legal immigrants on Christmas Eve -- and killing an American citizen -- without a word from our Senator? I also raised concerns about the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, described by the administration as an “arrest,” but requiring thousands of troops, extensive air power, and reportedly resulting in significant civilian deaths. Senator Collins issued an initial statement, but as the White House’s justification has shifted repeatedly, there has been no update. I asked whether she still stands by her posit…
