The *53rd* Cambridge Romance #Linguistics Seminar is coming down the pipe (6-7 Jan 2026) - very friendly and informal/great for PhDs (with a sterling conference dinner if the budget will stretch) - CfP for a very doable 300 word abstract here: linguistlist.org/issues/36/22... #edusky #langsky

“In prison I began to think in a more systematic way about language,” he told the Guardian in 2006. “Why was I not detained before, when I wrote in English?” He decided from then on to write in Gikuyu, that “the only language I could use was my own”.

An interesting analysis of gender and dialogue in movies, incl. a Disney subset.
Gender is just one characteristic that comes into play on our screens. In a recent @languageonthemove.bsky.social podcast ep, @brynnquick.bsky.social and I discussed accents and how they can shape how we see the world

I think you have read that very differently than what we’ve tried to argue. Teachers are absolutely not the problem.

I don’t think we are taking a side or attacking you here are we? If you follow up on the work we cite that should be clear.

You can appreciate that there’s a certain formula to these sorts of publications that we can’t really avoid, much as we’d like to. We’d love more #linguistics in what is ultimately a very short piece but do follow up on the links we provide therein!
