There are many things players say they care about that they don’t - like ludonarrative dissonance.

It’s fun to criticize a game for having a kind protagonist… who is also a mass murderer. That does not mean players *actually* want to shoot less, or want asshole characters.

This is a pretty good example why, even outside of creative, if I find out your business uses AI at any point in your workflow, I lose 90% confidence.

It’s not an ethical concern, it’s a competency one. I assume you’re an idiot if you think these things can work reliably in any critical role.

Colegas de su propio centro critican que Barbacid no explique mejor su conflicto de interés. Él y sus compañeras Carmen Guerra y Vasiliki Liaki han solicitado una patente para la explotación comercial de su terapia experimental, si es que algún día se hace realidad. Ellos tres y otros socios constituyeron en abril de 2024 una empresa, Vega Oncotargets, para desarrollar el tratamiento en animales. La compañía proclamaba a toda pantalla en su página web —hasta este viernes— que han logrado “la primera terapia efectiva contra el cáncer de páncreas”, pero el eslogan está lejos de ser cierto. El grupo, tras recibir un rechazo de la prestigiosa revista Nature, publicó su estudio el 2 de diciembre en PNAS, de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos. Como Barbacid es académico, tiene derecho a publicar sus trabajos por la vía rápida, con una revisión un poco más laxa. Aquel estudio con 45 ratones curados pasó desapercibido durante casi dos meses, hasta que el científico organizó la multitudinaria rueda de prensa del 27 de enero en colaboración con la fundación privada CRIS contra el cáncer. Entonces fue noticia mundial. Barbacid ya anunció en 2011, cuando era director del CNIO, que su equipo había descubierto un mecanismo “que impide la aparición y el desarrollo del cáncer de pulmón”, según tituló una nota de prensa. En el mismo comunicado, acusaba al Ministerio de Ciencia de frenar su investigación al impedir la llegada de financiación privada. En una dura respuesta, el departamento de la entonces ministra, la bióloga Cristina Garmendia, lamentó “las falsas expectativas” generadas por Barbacid, “que juegan con el dolor y el miedo que produce esta enfermedad en la población”. El Ministerio, en un choque inédito, alertó: “No se deben anunciar hallazgos básicos realizados en ratones como si el paso a la curación en humanos fuese inmediato”. El nuevo estudio del grupo de Barbacid expone los resultados de una “triple terapia”, que ataca por tres flancos diferentes a la proteína KRAS, una especie de interruptor que hace que una célula se divida. Algunas alteraciones en esa molécula ―a causa del tabaquismo, por ejemplo― hacen que las células se desboquen, se multipliquen sin control y generen un tumor. La “triple terapia” consiste en tres fármacos experimentales: el daraxonrasib, de la empresa estadounidense Revolution Medicines; el afatinib, de la alemana Boehringer Ingelheim; y el SD-36, desarrollado por el químico Shaomeng Wang en la Universidad de Míchigan (EE UU). EL PAÍS ha pedido su opinión sobre el estudio a tres expertos independientes de Estados Unidos. El biólogo Pawel Mazur, del Centro Oncológico MD Anderson de la Universidad de Texas, subraya que “Barbacid es un líder indiscutible en la investigación del cáncer de páncreas” y que su último artículo es “uno de los avances preclínicos [en animales] más convincentes y alentadores” en este campo. Sin embargo, Mazur es muy crítico con la comunicación pública del trabajo. “La forma en la que se han presentado estos hallazgos —con referencias a una “cura” y a una “primera terapia efectiva”— va mucho más allá de lo que respaldan las pruebas actuales y se corre el riesgo de generar expectativas poco realistas en pacientes desesperados”, lamenta el biólogo. “Sería más responsable presentar este trabajo como un paso inicial muy prometedor, que podría ayudar a diseñar futuros ensayos clínicos [en humanos], en lugar de como una solución a corto plazo para las personas que actualmente viven con cáncer de páncreas”.

Intrepid Studios, the developer behind MMORPG Ashes of Creation, has undergone mass layoffs and will potentially shut down, seven weeks after the game's Steam Early Access launch.

Workers began posting about layoffs late last week, with CEO Steven Sharif announcing his resignation soon afterward.
