So the relevant causal connection is Trump's tariffs. Soybean farmers' ire in the US should be directed at Trump's tariffs, not at the Argentina currency bailout, which itself has no particular boosting effect on Argentine soybean exports (it might even have a limiting effect, though uncertain).

tbh I don't get the connection of the Argentina bailout to soybeans suggested tonight on @allinwithchris.bsky.social . There was some causal connection being suggested between Arg. getting a bailout and them selling soybeans to China. But wouldn't they sell soybeans with or without a US bailout?

⚡️NEW: Trump defends Hamas crackdown on gangs in Gaza, likens it to cleaning up Washington, D.C.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said Hamas “did take out a couple of gangs that were very bad… and killed a number of gang members.”

“And that didn’t bother me much, to be honest with you,” he added. “That’s okay.”

Trump compared it to how his own administration handled violent gangs, claiming “Venezuela sent their gangs into the U.S., and we took care of those gangs,” and Washington, D.C., once “one of the worst cities in the country,” is now a better place thanks to similar crackdowns.

“Now it’s safe. You can walk to work. Isn’t it nice?” Trump said. Correspondent claims: "Hamas is rearming itself as a police force, shooting rivals. What's the message to Hamas?

"Because they want to stop the problems. They have been open about it. And we gave them an approval for a period of time..."

PA President Mahmoud Abbas was the only Palestinian leader present at this summit.

Why didn't Abbas sign on to this plan too? Was he not allowed to? Did he not want to?

Having been burnt by tariffs twice, American farmers and Chinese buyers will probably seek to reduce their mutual dependence. That is a boon for soyabean farmers in Brazil

The situation would get even trickier if Trump continued this "stealing from Peter to pay Paul" approach to meet the demands Democrats are making to end the shutdown. Let's say he takes money from the IRS budget to fund Medicaid or some such nonsense. Do Democrats have a response ready for that?

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

Does the word "immediately" really mean "immediately"? A lot hinges on that.

Radical centrist Macron strikes again
taniel.bsky.social
France still doesn't have a prime minster, as Emmanuel Macron promised a new name today — but it's now 9pm local time.

What we know: The center-left parties said today Macron made it clear he would once again *not* call them to lead a government — for now the fourth time since July 2024.

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."

In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.

I really appreciate Justice Jackson contrasting the lower courts' meticulous and responsible approach to judging—extensive deliberations, written opinions—with the Supreme Court's slapdash, unreasoned work over the shadow docket. www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...
They have done so in reasoned and thoughtful written opinions—opinions that, in the nor- ‘mal course, we would get to parse, assess, and embrace or reject, while fully explaining our reasoning.
