Huge influx of new people, so this seems like a good time to do an introduction. Hi! I'm a writer in Portland, Oregon. You probably followed me because of political posts but in happier times I write a lot about spirits and cocktails.

If you're looking to support independent media that's actually meeting the moment in American politics, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than Liberal Currents.

Checking news from the US is especially surreal while on a trip to France and Switzerland. Go to a charming Christmas market. Eat a delicious piece of cheese. Look at your phone and see that the president wants to execute his political opponents for sedition.

"Dressing up as an inflatable creature to protest is obviously ridiculous. It’s also, in its own way, a brilliant tactic in today’s terribly degraded information environment. To live in Portland is to live in a city about which the president of the United States lies constantly."

Really excellent bit of writing from @jacobgrier.bsky.social . Maybe it's the too much wine I drank this afternoon, but it actually gave me a bit of hope.
It's always a delight to write for @theunpopulist.net, which consistently publishes some of the smartest public intellectuals around, as well as articles by me like "Superman is cool" and "I dressed up in an inflatable dog costume."
More people need to know the name @jacobgrier.bsky.social. This, in @theunpopulist.net, is absolute gold.

People of Portland, it's not often you get to try two different spirits infused with rye bread. Maybe you didn't even know this was a thing you needed. But it is! Rye whiskey from PDX, aquavit from Iceland, both bread-infused. Get that bread with me Wednesday 5-7 at Loyal Legion SE.

Throwback to 2007 when I had skills (but not yet a good camera phone). Can confirm that getting that perfect flow of milk into espresso to make a rosetta is extremely satisfying. The temptation to do this very part-time again is real.
