A frankly tiny number of people, in the grand scheme of things, with every right to do so coming to UK is hardly a "surge", but such language automatically frames them as a negative and is guaranteed to be used to stoke more division.

The issue was rerouting to Edinburgh in the hope they'd be able to land there but they were already struggling with fuel by then. An immediate diversion to Manchester would have been the safer option.

An investigation is underway after a Ryanair flight landed in Manchester with less than the minimum amount of fuel left in its tanks.

The plane landed with just 220kg left in the tank – an amount which is sufficient for around five to six minutes of flying time.
