There's every reason in the world to be wary of what's coming next, but we can still be happy for the children of Gaza and the hostages' families.

Ceasefire in effect. Not impossible that this is the end of the Gaza war.

There's been a lot of evidence put out there recently that scientists and tech folks should have to take more humanities courses in their education.

As the Moon eclipsed the Sun on 8 April 2024, birds took note.

Leveraging nature’s own experiment, scientists and the public joined forces to show how different species responded to sudden midafternoon darkness followed by a new “dawn.” Learn more this week in Science: https://scim.ag/48WbhLL

Waking up to a morning of hope.

Israeli cabinet to approve deal today which will mark the beginning of a ceasefire. 24hrs later IDF will partially withdraw and 48-72hrs live hostages released, maybe most of the dead too. Then talks over next stages and Trump visit here.

A time to build.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Nobel coverage is fast-paced, and there's often not time to reflect on the accomplishment before the next one. (Congrats to the Chem laureates, by the way.)

My day two story on why Clarke, Devoret, and Martinis were looking for macroscopic quantum tunneling and how they managed the tricky search:

Wait so even post-Brexit, the EU does business in English? Yes it’s pathetic I don’t know the answer to that question😭 Were French and German words banned too?

Well, well... who wants to be cited at the beginning of one of my papers next year? #NobelPrize
The first three references in my tutorial review, respectively citing the foundational works by Robson, Kitagawa, and Yaghi in the field of MOFs.

Have we written about MOFs before? Um, quite a bit:

Another person who would surely have been in contention is Gérard Férey, who sadly passed away in 2017. His MIL-53 and MIL-101 structures continue to wonder and show new applications.
