The 2025 #NobelPrize in Chemistry was awarded today for the development of metal-organic frameworks, molecular sponges with applications in gas storage, water purification and more: www.compoundchem.com/2025/10/08/2...

Infographic on the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi for the development of metal-organic frameworks. The infographic explains that metal-organic frameworks are molecular sponges built up from metal ions and organic compounds that act as linkers. Small molecules such as gases can move into and out of cavities in these frameworks. The graphic highlights some of the MOFs the laureates have developed and concludes by looking at possible future uses of MOFs, including gas storage and extracting water from air.

You: They did the math.

Me: ᵀʰᵉʸ ᵈⁱᵈ ᵗʰᵉ ᵐᵒⁿˢᵗᵉʳ ᵐᵃᵗʰ

You: What was that?

Me: Nothing.

"It's true that in previous reactions, many or most reactants have been balanced across the equation, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary" #ChemSky

Final Nobel predictions:
- Installing a reactive handle in step 1, then calling it late-stage functionalisation after swapping some protecting groups around
- Adding a drop of water to your reaction mixture and calling it "green"
- Pioneering the use of "unprecedented" in paper titles

When I turned 25 I was legit deeply concerned that I had not yet written The Great American Novel, now at 56 if I could time travel back to meet that young fellow worried about not having birthed a True Work of Timeless Art in his first quarter century, I would, lovingly, turn the hose upon him

I need to hear this as a late 20-something who's worried that if I haven't had a solid career since 18, my life is pointless.

I’ve done this but backwards and it works well - benzyl alcohol and CDI in DCM (or toluene- it’s been a while) and then react with amine

You can even flash the benzoyl-imidazole if needed - stores well in fridge too - made a series of substituted benzyl carbamates for a project years ago
