Mac Resolve users can now finally be rid of Rec.709-A and all the confusion it breeds:

forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.ph...

(Though not because Apple fixed their nonsense. It’s that Resolve is now managing it with less manual effort.)

I’ve got 2x 27” for app GUI left and right.

A 32” reference display in center.

Plus scopes on a cheap 13” positioned lower left.

So yeah, I vote for at least 2.

Thank you for the recommendations!

Sounds good as my preferred mode of travel is train + bike. While not the only reason I enjoy Japan, the fact that it’s easy to do in many areas is a big one.

And the addendum, ha!
I see it.

For those who plan to visit Nikko someday, which area of it would you recommend?

Currently in Japan and injured my knee. Despite paying full fare since I’m not covered by insurance here, the cost to see orthopedist + Xray + ultrasound + MRI was less than 5% of what I have to pay for same care in California, on top of a $700+ monthly premium.

We’re being screwed in US.

After explaining multiple times why the edit should contain only camera original media before kicking out the XML for color, what does the editor do?

Tells me he plans to intentionally put shit in the timeline that was baked out, cut up, exported again and re-imported. Instead of media managing.

Started tracking my sleep last year and damn my graphs look similar to the example for non-24 sleep-wake disorder.

I can only hope that’s how it shakes out.

I should clarify that I’m not saying there’s anything inherently bad about ProResRAW.

It’s just newly added to Resolve, has no documentation by BMD yet, and Apple own documentation of it is not as detailed as it could/should be.
jamielejeune.bsky.social
I’ve not yet found any documentation on the “Apple Log 2” that was announced with the iPhone 17.

But poking at Resolve 20.2 revealed:

1. Apple Log 2 appears to use the same transfer function as Apple Log.

2. Apple Log 2 primaries are wider virtual primaries, rather than the Rec.2020 of Apple Log.
jamielejeune.bsky.social
ProResRAW has been added to Resolve.

As is typical of Apple’s overzealous drive to simplify, the controls are hobbled and yield unexpected results.

And I see some wild (bad) advice floating around online.

I’d be wary and run your own careful tests before painting yourself into a corner with it.

We need cheap rent so idiosyncratic weirdos can make a living pursuing their passions.

Call it Anti-Industrial Policy: we need is a suite of policies to nudge Americans to own and operate more little public-facing businesses. Speciality shops. Six-seater bars. Esoteric services. Restaurants serving two or three dishes. It would lower overall productivity and increase quality of life.

#PostChat In case you didn't know, #apple released a API to allow @dropbox.com to have your file sync to an external drive. Not sure when this happened, but I'm thankful.

I’m glad it’s useful.

I wish it was possible to honestly reply that computer displays just work for grading.

Colorists don’t spend money on reference displays and I/O cards+ boxes for fun 🤑

It’s unfortunately the only way to consistently trust we are viewing a faithful representation.

*though there is one exception

On XDR MacBook Pro, when set to the preset HDTV BT.1886 reference mode, setting Rec.709-A as output color space (with “use Mac Profiles engaged”) is the only way to get the Resolve GUI + Cleanfeed to display 2.4 gamma

But that’s *not* the case for Studio Display.
jamielejeune.bsky.social
Rec.709-A is only useful when your goal is to match the Resolve GUI + cleanfeed to how Apple software displays video with 1-1-1 NCLC tags.

That isn’t reference, there isn’t a standard way to adapt that for cinema, and it won’t look the same on any device that isn’t Apple’s.
jamielejeune.bsky.social
That’s as close to a standard reference setup as you can get on the Apple Display.

The backlight bleed and black that is actually gray will still be bad. Settings can’t fix the hardware limitations
jamielejeune.bsky.social
First thing is to grade by viewing an image you can trust.

- Work in dim (not bright) D65 lighting
-Set your Apple Studio Display to BT.1886
-In Resolve prefs, engage “use Mac Display Profiles”
- Leave project/timeline output color space at the default Rec.709(scene)
jamielejeune.bsky.social
Nothing is accurate on the web because there is no consistent standard thats universally followed. All that can be done on the web is aim for the middle of the mess between Apple and not-Apple.

Even if we ignore Apple, and stick to just PC/Android, it’s still not simple:

Separate projects aren’t necessary.

DCI projection gamma is 2.6, but before diving into export, since you haven’t started yet, first priority is to get your grading setup correct.

I highly recommend grading on a calibrated external display connected via BMD i/o rather than a computer display.
jamielejeune.bsky.social
Depends on what you’ve actually been viewing.

- Which of the Mac’s display settings are you using?
- Is “use Mac display profiles” engaged in the Resolve preferences?
- What output color space for your project/timeline was set while grading?

All those variables affect the GUI + Clean Feed

Microsoft spent $26 billion on LinkedIn.

And over 40 billion on “AI” so far.

Yet somehow LinkedIn still assumes I color hair rather than film/video.

But please tell me again how AI is gonna help me run my business.
